As pastor of the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor, the poet and theologian Johann Christoph Biernatzki was an eyewitness and victim of the great storm surge, known as the Great Hallig Flood, which devastated the entire North Sea coast in the days from 3 to 5 February 1825. The disaster claimed around 800 lives. The Halligen suffered particularly heavy losses and destruction. It was almost a miracle that the silver-gilt communion chalice that the congregation had used since 1459 was recovered from the rubble of the destroyed church of Nordstrandischmoor (today at the National Museum in Copenhagen).
Biernatzki went on to describe the event at the end of his novella “Die Hallig, oder: Die Schiffbrüchigen auf dem Eiland in der Nordsee” (first edition in 1836), which was translated into several languages. The painter Carl Ludwig Jessen draws on this depiction, choosing the striking moment when a young pastor holds out the communion chalice to the sorely afflicted churchgoers from all age groups as a symbol of hope and consolation. Moving from left to right, Jessen spreads the action like on a theatrical stage. Shown in profile view, the pastor stands in the left third of the picture, raising the chalice in his right hand and pointing to it with his left to emphasise the symbolic power. The people, their experiences reflected in a wide range of emotions, look up, while others cover their faces in anguish or glance down. The storm does not appear to have passed completely: the wind continues to whip the churchgoers’ clothes and hair. A tempestuous sea buffeting shipwrecks is shown in the background.
The monumental painting was preceded by a watercolour (Museumsberg Flensburg, 29 x 56 cm) and a pencil drawing (NordseeMuseum Husum, 30.5 x 46.5 cm). They essentially contain all of the compositional elements. It is not known why Jessen transferred the theme with the same ensemble of figures to the portrait format of a second version he produced in 1879 (also at MKdW). A third, smaller version, completely identical to the first (private collection, approx. 64 x 110 cm), was painted in 1908. The literary claim that Jessen’s composition was inspired by Carl Friedrich Lessing’s monumental history painting “Hussite Sermon” (1835/36, Berlin, National Gallery), itself a very successful work, does not appear to hold water due to the virtually square format of the picture and its concentric composition around the radical preacher portrayed from the front.
Whatever the truth, Jessen also processed the theme of the storm surge in his monumental painting “Bewohner von Nordstrand auf den Trümmern ihrer Wohnstätte, nach der großen Sturmflut im Jahre 1634” (Husum, NordseeMuseum), which was first presented at the North Frisian Art Exhibition of 1903 in Husum. Der Dichter und Theologe Johann Christoph Biernatzki war als Pastor der Hallig Nordstrandischmoor selbst Augenzeuge und Betroffener der großen Sturmflut, der sogenannten Großen Halligflut, die in den Tagen vom 3. bis 5. Februar 1825 an der gesamten Nordseeküste tobte. Rund 800 Menschen verloren damals ihr Leben. Besonders große Verluste und Zerstörungen verzeichneten die Halligen. Es kam fast einem Wunder gleich, dass die  Bergungsarbeiten in den Trümmern der zerstörten Kirche von Nordstrandischmoor den silber-vergoldeten Abendmahlskelch, den die Gemeinde seit 1459 verwendete,  wieder zum Vorschein brachte (heute Kopenhagen, Nationalmuseum). 
Im Nachgang schilderte Biernatzki das Ereignis am Ende seiner Novelle „Die Hallig, oder: Die Schiffbrüchigen auf dem Eiland in der Nordsee“ (Erstauflage 1836), die in mehreren Sprachen übersetzt wurde. Auf diese Schilderung greift der Maler Carl Ludwig Jessen zurück, wobei er den prägnanten Moment wählt, in dem ein junger Pastor den Abendmahlskelch als Symbol der Hoffnung und des Trostes den Leidgeprüften allen Alters entgegenhält. Jessen fächert die Handlung wie auf einer Bühne von links nach rechts auf. Im linken Bilddrittel steht der Pastor seitlich zum Betrachter, hebt mit der Rechten den Kelch empor und weist noch zusätzlich, um die symbolische Kraft zu untermauern, mit der Linken auf ihn. Die Menschen, deren sehr verschiedenartige Regungen das Erfahrene widerspiegeln, schauen auf, andere verhüllen vor Schmerz das Gesicht oder blicken zu Boden. Der Sturm scheint immer noch nicht endgültig zur Ruhe gekommen zu sein: Der Wind erfasst weiterhin ihre Kleider und Haare. Im Hintergrund bleibt das Meer, in dem havarierte Schiffe treiben, aufgewühlt.     
Der monumentalen Gemäldefassung sind ein Aquarell (Museumsberg Flensburg, 29 x 56 cm) sowie eine Bleistiftzeichnung (NordseeMuseum Husum, 30,5 x 46,5 cm) vorausgegangen. Weitestgehend sind in ihnen bereits alle kompositorischen Elemente formuliert. Warum Jessen das Thema mit demselben Figurenensemble in einer zweiten, 1879 ausgeführten Fassung ins Hochformat überführte (ebenfalls im MKdW), nicht ist bekannt. Eine dritte kleinere und zur ersten Bildfindung vollständig identische Version (Privatbesitz, ca. 64 x 110 cm) entstand 1908. Der in der Literatur genannte Hinweis, das monumentale, seinerseits sehr erfolgreiche Historienbild „Die Hussitenpredigt“ von Carl Friedrich Lessing (1835/36, Berlin, Nationalgalerie) sei für Jessens Bildfindung vorbildgebend gewesen, scheint aufgrund des fast quadratischen Bildformats und der gewählten konzentrischen Komposition um den dort frontal agierenden fanatischen Prediger wenig stichhaltig. 
Unabhängig davon verarbeitete Jessen das Thema „Sturmflut“ noch in dem monumentalen Gemälde „Bewohner von Nordstrand auf den Trümmern ihrer Wohnstätte, nach der großen Sturmflut im Jahre 1634“ (Husum, NordseeMuseum), das erstmalig 1903 auf der Nordfriesischen Kunstausstellung in Husum präsentiert wurde. As the pastor of the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor, the poet and theologian Johann Christoph Biernatzki was himself an eyewitness and victim of the great storm surge, the so-called ‘Great Hallig Flood’, which raged along the entire North Sea coast in the days from 3 to 5 February 1825. Around 800 people lost their lives at the time. The Hallig islands suffered particularly heavy losses and destruction. In the aftermath, Biernatzki described the event at the end of his novella “Die Hallig, oder: Die Schiffbrüchigen auf dem Eiland in der Nordsee” (first edition 1836).

The painter Carl Ludwig Jessen drew on this depiction and fanned out the action from left to right as if on a stage. In the left third of the picture, the pastor stands to the side of the viewer. The people, their very different emotions reflecting what they have experienced, look up, others cover their faces in pain or look down. The storm does not seem to have calmed down yet: The wind continues to catch their clothes and hair. In the background, the sea, in which damaged ships drift, remains agitated.

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
