As pastor of the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor, the poet and theologian Johann Christoph Biernatzki was an eyewitness and victim of the great storm surge, known as the Great Hallig Flood, which devastated the entire North Sea coast in the days from 3 to 5 February 1825.
