Danish artist Carl Locher devotes this work to the dunes around Skagen, painting them in bright sunshine beneath a clear blue sky, with only a few puffy clouds. The play of light and shadow in the undulating elevations and hollows, the dune grass and the luminous pale sand transform the uniform and barren landscape into a richly contrasted study of the coastal strip. Despite the obvious proximity to the water – evidenced not least by the weathered wreckage of a dinghy in the foreground – the artist withholds from us a view of the breathtaking seascape around Skagen. This clearly emphasises the focal point in Locher’s composition – the challenge of adding contour and plasticity to a dazzlingly bright landscape in glaring, probably midday light, with the sun very high in the sky.
Encouraged by the poet and painter Holger Drachmann (1846–1908), Carl Locher first visits Skagen in 1872, shortly after beginning his studies at the Copenhagen academy. He travels extensively in western Europe, from Spain to Greenland and Iceland. He also undertakes several study trips to Paris. While in Skagen, he realises that his education requires exposure to the modern developments in art in the major centres of European art and, at the same time, further training in nature. But looking back on his first years in Skagen, he still notes:

“We didn’t entertain any theories and, absent of any genuine experiences thus far, had no idea what art really was. Ancher, Carl Madsen, [...] Tuxen and a few others joined us there. We painted the whole day in the sun, rain and storm. We painted what we saw and the way the things spoke to us – it seems to me now that we have never painted so well since.”(1)

Precisely this working method and naturalistic concept are recognisable in his dune landscape: Locher has clearly embraced the maxim of painting what he sees. Aside from the relatively compact format, the relaxed, clearly visible brushstrokes and the accentuated structure of the vegetation suggest that the motif was produced directly on the beach. It does not take much imagination to picture the Danish artist in the bright sunlight of Skagen beach, standing in front of his easel and pallet in a straw hat. KP

Bei hellstem Sonnenschein und klarem blauen Himmel, der nur von wenigen bauschige Wolken durchzogen ist, widmet sich der dänische Künstler Carl Locher den Dünen um Skagen. Das Licht- und Schattenspiel der Erhebungen und Mulden, des Dünengrases und des leuchtend hellen Sandes machen aus der gleichförmigen und kargen Landschaft eine kontrastreiche Studie des Küstenstreifens. Trotz der eindeutigen Nähe zum Wasser – nicht zuletzt verdeutlicht durch das verwitterte Wrackteil eines Beibootes im Vordergrund – verwehrt der Künstler uns den Blick auf die herausragende Meeressituation um Skagen. Somit wird der Schwerpunkt in Lochers Komposition deutlich – er liegt auf der Herausforderung, in grellen Lichtverhältnissen, wahrscheinlich zur Mittagszeit, bei sehr hochstehender Sonne, eine blendend helle Landschaft zu formulieren und ihr dennoch Kontur und Plastizität zu geben. 
Carl Locher kommt 1872 auf Empfehlung des Dichters und Malers Holger Drachmann (1846–1908) zum ersten Mal nach Skagen, kurz nachdem er sein Studium an der Kopenhagener Akademie begonnen hatte. Er bereist weite Teile Westeuropas von Spanien bis Grönland und Island. Mehrmals hält er sich zu Studienzwecken in Paris auf. In Skagen wird ihm klar, dass seine Ausbildung der Auseinandersetzung mit den modernen Entwicklungen der Kunst in der europäischen Kunstmetropole und gleichzeitig weiterer Schulung an der Natur bedarf. Dennoch stellt er im Rückblick auf seine ersten Skagener Jahre fest:

„Wir hatten keine Theorien, wußten eigentlich nicht, was Kunst war, denn wir hatten ja fast noch nichts gesehen. Ancher, Carl Madsen, [...] Tuxen und mehrere andere waren auch nachgekommen. Wir malten den ganzen Tag in Sonne, Regen und Sturm. Wir malten, was wir  sahen und so, wie die Dinge zu uns sprachen – es kommt mir jetzt vor, als hätten wir nie wieder so gut gemalt.“(1)

Genau diese Arbeitsweise und naturalistische Auffassung erkennen wir in dieser Dünenlandschaft: Das zu malen, was man sieht, ist hier zur Maxime Lochers geworden. Die lockere, deutlich ablesbare Pinselschrift und die akzentuiert gesetzten Formulierungen der Vegetation sprechen, neben dem relativ handlichen Format, für eine unmittelbare Umsetzung des Motivs direkt am Strand. Es ist nicht viel Fantasie nötig ist, sich den dänischen Künstler mit Strohhut, Staffelei und Farbpalette bei strahlendem Sonnenschein am Skagener Strand vorzustellen. KP

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
