Marsh Landscape with Grazing Cows in the Early Morning, 1876

In this small-format painting, Carl Ludwig Jessen chose a location on the verge of a country lane that leads deep into the landscape from the left border of the picture. A lush meadow with grazing cows and sheep extends out on the right. The early morning is gradually displacing the night that still sits like a dome over the farmsteads enclosed by tall trees on the horizon. Generally quite unpretentious, the North Frisian landscape did not attract much attention in the fine arts until the 1870s....
