Is the glass half empty or half full? This is the question Per Bak Jensen addresses to the viewers of his photograph. Will the prominent shadow continue to expand across the harvested maize field or will it recede? The play of light and shadow has occupied the Danish artist Per Bak Jensen since his earliest photographs, which he took in the Copenhagen Zoo at the age of ten. Back then, the dark shadows found their way into the boy’s pictures by chance – it was almost a mystery to him. He kept accidentally allowing his camera case to move in front of the lens. Today the shadows are a consistent and, naturally, an intentional component of his visual idiom. 
Per Bak Jensen shot the photo “Lysfyldt/Luminous” in a field on Föhr in 2023, during his stay as an artist in residence. It presents a familiar, somewhat austere scene. But it is precisely unremarkable views that convey the sense of a greater truth to Per Bak Jensen: “When you see my photos, I don’t know if you’ll see the hidden things. But what you do see is the places where I’ve felt that something was hidden, and that reaches out and somehow wants to contact me.”(1) 
Per Bak Jensen is assigned the role of a pioneer in the field of Danish landscape photography. Born in Copenhagen in 1949, he now lives a good 75 kilometres south of the Danish capital, in Stevns on the island of Zealand. After working at a variety of jobs he began his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1980, and in 1986 he became the first student to graduate with an independent and exclusive focus on the medium of photography. Das Spiel von Licht und Schatten beschäftigt den Dänen Per Bak Jensen seit seinen frühesten Fotografien, die er im Alter von zehn Jahren im Kopenhagener Zoo aufnahm. Damals gerieten die dunklen Schatten zufällig – für den Jungen fast mysteriös – ins Bild. Immer wieder schob sich seine Kamerahülle unbeabsichtigt vor die Linse. Heute sind die Schatten fester und natürlich beabsichtigter Bestandteil seiner Bildsprache. 
Das Bild „Lysfyldt/Luminous“ nahm Per Bak Jensen 2023 bei seinem Besuch als Artist-in-Residence auf einem Föhrer Feld auf. Es zeigt eine vertraute, etwas schmucklose Szene. Doch sind es gerade die unscheinbaren Ansichten, die Per Bak Jensen das Gefühl einer größeren Wahrheit vermitteln: „Wenn man meine Fotos betrachtet, weiß ich nicht, ob man die versteckten Dinge darin sieht. Was man aber sieht, das sind die Orte, an denen ich das Gefühl hatte, dass etwas im Verborgenen liegt, das sich an mich wendet und mich irgendwie kontaktieren will.“(1)
Per Bak Jensen wird auf dem Gebiet der dänischen Landschaftsfotografie eine Vorreiterrolle zugeschrieben. Geboren 1949 in Kopenhagen, lebt er heute gut 75 Kilometer südlich der Hauptstadt in Stevns auf Seeland. Nach wechselnden Berufen begann er 1980 ein Studium an der Königlich Dänischen Kunstakademie in Kopenhagen und war 1986 der erste Absolvent, der sich der Fotografie als eigenständigem und ausschließlichem Medium verschrieben hatte. Will the distinctive shadow continue to spread across the harvested cornfield or will it retreat?

The interplay of light and shadow has preoccupied Danish artist Per Bak Jensen (*1949) since his earliest photographs, which he took at the age of ten at Copenhagen Zoo. At that time, the dark shadows appeared in the picture by chance - almost mysteriously for the boy. Time and time again, his camera cover inadvertently slid in front of the lens. Today, the shadows are a fixed and naturally intentional part of his visual language.

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
