A low horizon line and lofty sky are typical of Johan Barthold Jongkind’s work, and he additionally liked to depict scenes set in the evening hours. This is also what we find in the painting here. A flat-bottomed boat glides along the canal towards the setting sun; the two men standing inside it are difficult to see in the twilight. A woman in an apron is stepping out of the scene on the path along the very edge of the picture. Meanwhile, the water is framed on both sides by trees, with one on the left soaring up into the cloudy sky. This passage also represents a focus of the artist: featuring a setting sun, the sky is permeated with colour, and rays of light dance on the choppy water in the dusky light in tones of pale pink, orange, yellow, white, blue and light purple.
Pure, unmixed colours of the kind that Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) or Claude Monet (1840–1926) would soon be using are not to be found in Johan Barthold Jongkind’s (1819–1891) work. The unpretentious character of his art and his special attention to mood and atmosphere nonetheless brought him a great deal of praise from his contemporaries. They particularly admired Jongkind’s watercolours, which display the hand of the master to such advantage – and seemingly so directly. Referring to these sheets, the young Monet told the journalist and art critic François Thiébault-Sisson that he owed the “definitive training of his eye” to Jongkind.(1) 
Johan Barthold Jongkind was from Overijssel and first studied with Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870), surely the best-known painter of Dutch romanticism. Jongkind’s talent helped secure him a bursary from the Dutch royal house, and this enabled him to go to Paris and continue his education with Eugène Isabey (1803–1886), among others. With the exception of a brief return to his homeland in the late 1880s for financial reasons, the artist spent the rest of his life in France. Jongkind initially exhibited his works successfully at the Salon de Paris. When the style of his painting changed, his pictures were turned down, and he joined the Salon des Refusés, a group of painters rejected by the salon. Jongkind occupied a fascinating position: on the one hand, he had connections with and elements in common with artists belonging to the Barbizon School and, on the other hand, with those developing the new style of impressionism. At the farm Saint-Siméon outside the town of Honfleur they gathered together, exchanging ideas and working: Monet, Gustave Courbet (1819–1877), Eugène Boudin (1824–1898) and Claude Constant Troyon (1810–1865) as well as writers and art critics like Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867). Ein niedrig angesetzter Horizont und ein hoher Himmel sind typisch für Johan Barthold Jongkind, der überdies gerne abendliche Stunden ins Bild setzte. So auch in diesem Bild: Ein Kahn gleitet durch den Kanal der untergehenden Sonne entgehen, im Zwielicht schwer erkennbar stehen zwei Männer darauf. Auf dem Pfad am äußersten Bildrand schreitet eine Frau mit einer Schürze aus der Szene. Derweil wird das Wasser zu beiden Seiten von Bäumen eingerahmt, links strebt einer zum wolkenverhangenen Himmel empor. Dort liegt auch der Fokus des Künstlers: Der Himmel mit der untergehenden Sonne ist farbig getränkt, auf dem kabbelnden Wasser tanzen Lichtstrahlen im Dämmerlicht – zarte rosa, orange, gelbe, weiße, blaue und lila Töne.

Zunächst stellte Jongkind seine Werke erfolgreich am Salon de Paris aus. Mit der Veränderung seines Malstils wurden seine Werke beim Salon abgelehnt und er schloss sich dem Salon des Refusés, einer Gruppe der vom Salon zurückgewiesenen Maler, an. Jongkind nimmt eine spannende Position ein: Kontakte und Berührungspunkte gab es einerseits mit Künstlern, die der Schule von Barbizon angehörten, andererseits mit den Akteuren, die den neuen Stil den Impressionismus entwickelten. Auf dem Bauernhof Saint-Siméon in der Nähe von Honfleur kamen sie zusammen, tauschten sich aus und arbeiteten: Monet, Gustave Courbet (1819–1877), Eugène Boudin (1824–1898), Claude Constant Troyon (1810–1865), und auch Schriftsteller und Kunstkritiker wie Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867). Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
