The painting depicts a harbour view in southern Norway. In the upper half of the picture, and thus on the opposite side of the shore from the viewer, the characteristically Nordic red wooden houses can be made out. The water surface, painted in light and dark blue tones, is interrupted by a few sailing boats. The lower coastline runs smoothly between land and water, its curve contrasting with the straight lines of the houses and the boats on the still water. It is precisely this coastline and also the reflections of the sailing ships on the calm sea that are strongly reminiscent of Edvard Munch's (1863–1944) work. Kavli had already chosen the idyllic subject of boats in the fjord in front of Norwegian cottages for his painting "Seilbåter ved Grimstad“ (Sailing Boats at Grimstad) in the 1920s. The shape of the boats in this painting suggests that it is a type of boat that was very popular from the mid-1920s and especially in the 1930s. The painting may be dated to the same period.
Born in Bergen in 1878, Arne Kavli made his debut in 1896 at a state art exhibition in Kristiania, now Oslo. A scholarship enabled him to study at the art academy in Antwerp in 1897. The young Kavli's education further took place in 1899 at the private art school of Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) and Laurits Tuxen (1853–1927) in Copenhagen. Kavli then moved to Paris. At this point the colours of his paintings began to change; in painted café scenes bright pastel shades à la Édouard Manet and colourful still scenes à la Max Liebermann now defined Kavli's work.
In the 1920s Kavli's painting style developed further: the colouring became darker again; geometric forms suggest a tentative approach to Art Deco. There was also an increasing use of glazed surfaces, which could be reminiscent of Parisian poster art around 1900 or a preoccupation with coloured surfaces in the graphic work of Edvard Munch.
In his works of the 1930s, Kavli then returned to strong lines, something he had already practised around 1900. In terms of subjects, Kavli moved between his garden at home and the southern Norwegian coast in this later phase until his death, which resulted in a limited range of motifs. SNS

Das Gemälde zeigt eine Hafenansicht in Südnorwegen. In der oberen Bildhälfte, und somit auf der gegenüberliegenden Uferseite des Betrachters, lassen sich die charakteristisch nordischen roten Holzhäuser ausmachen. Die in hell- und dunkelblauen Tönen gemalte Wasseroberfläche wird von einigen Segelbooten durchbrochen. Die untere Küstenlinie verläuft geschmeidig zwischen Land und Wasser und kontrastiert durch ihren Schwung zu den geraden Linien der Häuser und der Boote auf dem stillen Wasser. Eben jene schwungvolle Küstenlinie und auch die Spiegelungen der Segelschiffe auf der ruhigen See erinnern stark an die Art und Weise, wie Edvard Munch (1863–1944) diese gestaltete. Das idyllische Motiv der Boote im Fjord vor norwegischen Häuschen hat Kavli bereits in seinem Gemälde „Seilbåter ved Grimstad“ (dt.: „Segelboote bei Grimstad“) in den 1920er-Jahren gemalt. Die Form der Boote im vorliegenden Gemälde legt nahe, dass es sich um einen Bootstyp handelt, welcher sich ab der Mitte der 1920er-Jahre und besonders in den 1930er-Jahren großer Beliebtheit erfreute. Eine Datierung des Bildes in denselben Zeitraum ist anzunehmen.

Ebenfalls zeigt sich vermehrt eine lasierende Flächenbehandlung, welche eine Reminiszenz an die Pariser Plakatkunst um 1900 sein könnte oder eine Beschäftigung mit farbigen Flächen im grafischen Werk von Edvard Munch.
In den Werken der 1930er-Jahre kehrte Kavli dann zurück zu einer kräftigen Linienführung, welche er bereits um 1900 zu praktizieren pflegte. Motivisch bewegte sich Kavli in dieser späteren Phase bis zu seinem Tod zwischen seinem heimischen Garten und der südnorwegischen Küste, was sich in einem eingeschränkten Motivspektrum äußerte. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
