In the early 1870s the port of Rotterdam was expanded in response to increases in the size of ships and the volume of goods being traded. The most important new feature was the Nieuwe Waterweg, which linked the city directly to the North Sea. All this is scarcely recognisable in this painting created by Johan Barthold Jongkind in 1879. The artist has focused on the Oude Haven: directly adjacent to the city centre, it is the historical core of what is now the largest port in Europe. 
The painting conveys an air of sentimentality. Resting low in the sky, the round moon generates a magical effect. We are simultaneously struck by the artist’s vividly energetic brushwork, which captures the play of the evening light in the air and on the water in short strokes of broken colour. The distinctive old city gate rises up on the left, although it had already been torn down in 1856 during the construction of the new railway station. This nostalgic reference also sheds light on Jongkind’s working process: his paintings may seem lively and spontaneous, but they are actually carefully composed, and it often took years for the artist to develop paintings out of the impressions of a location he captured in watercolours. Once Jongkind had found a good motif, he also transferred it to other places. For example, an etching at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum dated to 1868 presents an evening harbour scene conceived in a manner very similar to our work, with a beam of light from the full moon shining on the water in the middle of the picture. This is framed by a large sailing ship on the right and a ship’s boat on the left.(1) However, according to the inscription on the printing plate, the harbour seen here is that of Antwerp, located around 100 kilometres south of Rotterdam.(2)
Born in the Dutch province of Overijssel, Jongkind initially studied with Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870) at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. A royal bursary enabled him to continue his education with Eugène Isabey (1803–1886) – a friend of Schelfhout’s specialising in seascapes – and to relocate to France, primarily Paris and Normandy. Jongkind repeatedly travelled in his homeland and returned with new motifs: Dutch art was greatly admired in France at that time. PL

Anfang der 1870er-Jahre wurde der Rotterdamer Hafen für die größer werdenden Schiffe und den intensivierten Warenverkehr ausgebaut. Als wichtigste Neuerung wurde der Nieuwe Waterweg ausgegraben, der die Stadt direkt mit der Nordsee verband. In dem 1879 entstandenen Gemälde von Johan Barthold Jongkind ist von all dem wenig zu sehen. Der Künstler konzentriert sich auf den Oude Haven, das historische, unmittelbar am Stadtzentrum anliegende Herzstück des heute größten Hafens Europas. 
Etwas Schwärmerisches geht von dem kleinen Gemälde aus. Der runde, tief stehende Mond entfaltet eine magische Wirkung. Zugleich fällt der lebhaft-energische Pinselstrich des Künstlers ins Auge, welcher das abendliche Lichtspiel in der Luft und auf dem Wasser in kurzen, gebrochenen Farbsetzungen einfängt. Links im Bild ragt das markante alte Stadttor auf, das eigentlich bereits 1856 im Zuge des Umbaus für den neuen Bahnhof abgetragen worden war. Jongkinds nostalgisches Zitat wirft auch ein Licht auf die Vorgehensweise des Künstlers: Seine Gemälde mögen lebhaft und spontan wirken, sie sind jedoch sorgfältig komponiert und oft kam der Künstler erst Jahre später dazu, seine vor Ort als Aquarelle festgehaltenen Eindrücke als Gemälde zu verarbeiten. Hatte der Künstler einmal ein gutes Motiv für sich gefunden, übertrug er dieses auch auf unterschiedliche Orte: So zeigt eine auf das Jahr 1868 datierte Radierung aus dem Amsterdamer Rijksmuseum eine ganz ähnlich konzipierte abendliche Hafenszene, bei welcher der Vollmond in der Bildmitte einen Lichtkegel auf das Wasser wirft; zur rechten Seite wird die Szene von einem großen Segler, links von einem Beiboot eingerahmt.(1) Laut Inschrift, die Teil der Druckplatte ist, handelt es sich hier aber um den rund 100 Kilometer südlich von Rotterdam gelegenen Hafen von Antwerpen.(2)
Der aus dem niederländischen Overijssel gebürtige Jongkind studierte zunächst bei Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870) an der Königlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Den Haag. Mithilfe eines Stipendiums des Königshauses setzte er seine Ausbildung bei dem mit Schelfhout befreundeten, auf Seestücke spezialisierten Maler Eugène Isabey (1803–1886) fort und verlagerte seinen Lebensmittelpunkt nach Frankreich, insbesondere Paris und die Normandie. Mehrfach bereiste Jongkind seine Heimat und kehrte mit neuen Motiven zurück – niederländische Kunst wurde in Frankreich damals sehr geschätzt. PL

In this 1879 painting by Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819 – 1891), the artist focuses on the Oude Haven in Rotterdam, the historic heart of what is now Europe's largest port, located directly adjacent to the city centre. The striking old city gate, which was actually demolished in 1856 when the new railway station was built, towers on the left of the picture. Jongkind's nostalgic reference also sheds light on the artist's approach: his paintings may appear lively and spontaneous, but they are carefully composed and it was often only years later that the artist came to process the impressions he had captured on location as watercolours into paintings. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
