In the early 1870s the port of Rotterdam was expanded in response to increases in the size of ships and the volume of goods being traded. The most important new feature was the Nieuwe Waterweg, which linked the city directly to the North Sea. All this is scarcely recognisable in this painting created by Johan Barthold Jongkind in 1879. The artist has focused on the Oude Haven: directly adjacent to the city centre, it is the historical core of what is now the largest port in Europe.
