The German expressionist Otto Mueller travelled multiple times to the North Sea island of Föhr, where he visited his sister, and to Sylt. The lithograph “Dunes on Sylt” testifies to Mueller’s intense familiarity with this printmaking medium and his exploration of the expressionist perception of natural impressions. Carried out in a reductive manner, the composition of this small-format print draws our attention to the essential: the dune-filled landscape on the North Sea island of Sylt. Black contours form themselves into a hilly landscape of dunes behind exotic-looking plants. Faint hints of hatching take up the oscillating course of the shifting sand. A gently sloping hollow enables us to see the motionless sea as well as the empty horizon. Mueller has used broad strokes to sketch the blades of marram grass in the foreground. The exoticising of nature transforms Sylt’s dune-filled landscape into an imaginary paradise. Mueller’s composition is consistent with progressive efforts from the late 19th century to find a way back to nature with the help of new models for living and ultimately to achieve a unity between humankind and nature. The “Brücke” artists subsequently travelled to secluded places corresponding to their notion of paradise.(1) Far from the influences of industry and society, they attempted to realise their living utopia there.
Otto Mueller primarily concentrated on painting and lithography. He was trained as a lithographer in Görlitz from 1890 to 1894 and then enrolled at the academy of art in Dresden for the two years that followed. There he occupied himself with open-air painting and developed his studies outdoors in nature. However, Mueller considered his actual course of study inadequate, and he quickly turned away from its academic instruction to continue to develop his style as an autodidact. He was influenced by the contemporary current of German expressionism, particularly the “Brücke” artist group. As a member of this group, Mueller worked closely with the other artists from 1910 until it disbanded in 1913. While it is possible to identify strong stylistic and compositional similarities to the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) and Erich Heckel (1883–1970), Mueller’s works are particularly distinct due to their muted and often reserved use of colour. Die Lithografie „Dünen auf Sylt“ zeugt von Muellers intensiver Kenntnis des druckgrafischen Mediums und seiner Auseinandersetzung mit der expressionistischen Wahrnehmung des Natureindrucks. In ihrer reduzierten Ausführung lenkt die Komposition der kleinformatigen Druckgrafik den Blick auf das Wesentliche: die Dünenlandschaft auf der Nordseeinsel Sylt. Schwarze Konturen formen sich hinter exotisch anmutenden Pflanzen zu einer hügeligen Dünenlandschaft. Leicht angedeutete Schraffuren greifen den wellenförmigen Sandverlauf auf. Durch eine sanfte Ausbuchtung wird der Blick auf das unbewegte Meer sowie den leeren Horizont ermöglicht. Mit breiten Strichen skizziert Mueller die Halme des Strandhafers im Vordergrund. Die Exotisierung der Natur verwandelt die Sylter Dünenlandschaft in ein imaginäres Paradies. Mueller folgt mit seiner Komposition dem progressiven Bestreben des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts, mit Hilfe eines neuen Lebensentwurfs zurück zur Natur zu finden und letztlich eine Einheit zwischen Mensch und Natur zu erreichen. In der Folge reisten die Künstler der „Brücke“ an abgelegene Orte, die ihrer Vorstellung vom Paradies entsprachen.(1) Fernab industrieller und sozialer Einflüsse versuchten sie, dort ihre Lebensutopie zu realisieren.

Von 1890 bis 1894 ging er in Görlitz in die Lithografenlehre und schrieb sich in den darauffolgenden zwei Jahren an der Kunstakademie in Dresden ein. Dort setzte er sich mit der Freiluftmalerei auseinander und arbeitete seine Studien in der Natur aus. Das Studium selbst erschien Mueller jedoch als unzureichend, so dass er sich zügig von der akademischen Lehre abwandte und seinen Stil autodidaktisch weiterentwickelte. Beeinflusst wurde er durch die zeitgenössische Strömung des deutschen Expressionismus und hier vor allem durch die deutsche Künstlergruppe „Brücke“. Als Mitglied dieser Gruppierung arbeitete Mueller zwischen 1910 bis zu ihrer Auflösung 1913 eng mit den anderen Künstlern zusammen. Während sich stilistisch sowie kompositorisch starke Ähnlichkeiten zu den Werken von Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) und Erich Heckel (1883–1970) ablesen lassen, variieren Muellers Arbeiten vor allem durch ihr gedämpftes und oftmals zurückhaltendes Kolorit. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
