A bright window with white drapes is shown in the rear of an apartment. Refracted sunshine streams into the house, presumably from another, invisible window in the middle room, flooding across the door sill and into the front room.
Despite the title’s suggestion, the scene is certainly not bathed in light. The rest of the apartment, comfortably furnished with a grandfather clock and plush armchair, remains instead in semi-darkness; even the figure sitting at the table is only discernible as a black shadow.
Interior views have an important place in Anna Ancher’s oeuvre. Her own family often features in the atmospheric pictures of rooms – her mother Ane Brøndum, daughter Helga or husband Michael Ancher, who, like herself, belonged to the prominent Skagen artists’ colony. The artist was known and fêted during her lifetime for her virtuoso depiction of the varying effects of light, shadow and colour. In the words of Karl Madsen, later director of Copenhagen’s Statens Museum for Kunst and first director of Skagens Museum, she was “the first person in Danish art who knew how to capture a ray of sunshine.” PL

Im hinteren Teil der Wohnung erscheint ein helles Fenster, das von einer weißen Gardine verhangen ist. Vermutlich von einem weiteren, nicht sichtbaren Fenster im mittleren Raum strömt Sonnenschein ins Haus, der mittels Brechung über die Türschwelle in das vordere Zimmer einfällt.  
Lichtdurchflutet, wie es der Titel vermuten lässt, ist die Szene eben nicht. Vielmehr verbleibt der Rest der gemütlich mit Standuhr und Plüschsessel ausgestatteten Wohnung im Halbdunkel, auch die am Tisch sitzende Gestalt ist nur als schwarzer Schatten erkennbar. 
Interieurs nehmen einen wichtigen Stellenwert im Œuvre von Anna Ancher ein. Oftmals lässt sie in ihren stimmungsvollen Raumbildern die eigene Familie auftreten – ihre Mutter Ane Brøndum, die Tochter Helga oder ihren Mann Michael Ancher, der wie sie selbst der bedeutenden Skagener Künstlerkolonie angehörte. Bekannt und schon zu Lebzeiten gerühmt wurde die Künstlerin dabei vor allem für ihre virtuose Darstellung unterschiedlicher Licht-, Schatten- und Farbwirkungen. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
