Arne Kavli's painting “Figures on a Coastal Rock” exudes a cheerful holiday atmosphere, as experienced by the artist during his numerous summer sojourns on the coast of Jæren near Stavanger in Norway. Shown in back view, the three persons portrayed here, two women and a man, are dressed in elegant attire. Sitting on a stony beach, the small group is enjoying the beautiful view of the bright blue sea, the white sailing boats and the green rolling hills on the opposite shore. The two women carry parasols, which emphasises the holiday mood. Kavli found important inspiration during his education in Paris between 1902 and 1903, which is reflected in the reduced forms and his rough brushwork. This brings the colouring into the foreground, which therefore exerts a strong influence on the visual effect of his composition. The strongest contrast in the otherwise light-toned painting is the mixture of black, blue and violet that is predominant in the dress and parasol of the woman on the left. This dark figure has its counterpart in the lady in white, who occupies a crucial position at the centre of the picture. The radiant ochre-yellow of her parasol establishes a visual connection to the man sitting next to her, wearing a hat in the same shade. It is possible that Kavli was deliberately exploiting colour symbolism in this case to conceal clues as to the enigmatic relationship between the three people. Married three times, the artist was clearly no stranger to complex interpersonal relationships. He married his first wife Mathilde Larsen, called “Tulla” (1869–1942), in 1903, just a year after the dramatic end to her turbulent folie à deux with the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863–1944), whose paintings and prints also feature in the MKdW collection.
Kavli lived, studied and worked in several centres of European art. In 1897, he used a stipend to continue his education at the local art academy in the Belgian city of Antwerp, before taking lessons under Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) and Laurits Tuxen (1853–1927) at Copenhagen’s private art school (Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler) in 1899. Leaving Denmark, Kavli moved to Paris, where he lived until 1914.
An important focus of the collection of the Museum Kunst der Westküste is on works of art that were produced in connection with the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen. Kavli’s education under Krøyer and Tuxen – two of the most influential members of this artists’ colony – is therefore particularly exciting in the context of the MKdW collection: this connection underlines how the west coast area became a fruitful breeding ground for artists around 1900. Arne Kavlis Gemälde „Figuren auf einem Stein an der Küste“ ist von einer heiteren Urlaubsatmosphäre beherrscht, wie sie der Künstler bei seinen zahlreichen Sommeraufenthalten in Norwegen an der Küste von Jæren bei Stavanger erleben konnte. Die drei in Rückenansicht porträtierten Personen, zwei Frauen und ein Mann, tragen elegante Kleidung. An einem steinigen Strand sitzend, genießt die kleine Gruppe den schönen Ausblick auf das strahlend blaue Meer, die weißen Segelboote und die grünen sanften Erhebungen auf der gegenüberliegenden Uferseite. Unterstrichen wird die Urlaubsstimmung durch die Sonnenschirme der beiden Damen. Während seiner Ausbildung in Paris zwischen 1902 und 1903 erhielt Kavli wichtige Anstöße, die sich in den reduzierten Formen und seiner groben Pinselführung widerspiegeln. Die auf diese Weise in den Vordergrund gerückte Farbgebung bestimmt die Bildwirkung seiner Komposition maßgeblich mit. Den stärksten Kontrast in dem sonst helltonigen Gemälde bildet die Mischung aus Schwarz, Blau und Violett, die in Kleid und Schirm der Frau links vorherrscht. Diese dunkle Gestalt hat ihr Gegenstück in der Dame in Weiß. Letztere nimmt eine zentrale Position in der Bildmitte ein. Das strahlende Ocker-Gelb ihres Schirmes verbindet sie optisch mit dem neben ihr sitzenden Mann, der einen Hut im gleichen Farbton trägt. Möglicherweise machte Kavli hier von einer gezielten Farbsymbolik Gebrauch, in der sich Hinweise auf das rätselhafte Verhältnis der drei Personen verbergen. Komplexe zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen waren dem dreimal verheirateten Künstler sicher nicht fremd. Seine erste Frau, Mathilde, genannt „Tulla“, Larsen (1869–1942), ehelichte er 1903, nur ein Jahr nachdem ihre turbulente Liebesbeziehung mit dem berühmten norwegischen Maler Edvard Munch (1863–1944), der mit Gemälden und Druckgrafiken ebenfalls in der Sammlung des MKdW vertreten ist, zu einem dramatischen Ende kam. 
Kavli lebte, studierte und arbeitete in mehreren europäischen Kunstzentren. 1897 setzte er in der belgischen Stadt Antwerpen an der dortigen Kunstakademie seine Ausbildung mit Hilfe eines Stipendiums fort, bevor er 1899 an der privaten Kunstschule (Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler) in Kopenhagen Unterricht bei Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) und Laurits Tuxen (1853–1927) nahm. Im Anschluss an seine Zeit in Dänemark zog Kavli nach Paris, wo er bis 1914 lebte. 
Ein wichtiger Sammlungsschwerpunkt des Museums Kunst der Westküste liegt auf Kunstwerken, die im Zusammenhang mit der dänischen Künstlerkolonie Skagen entstanden sind. Kavlis Ausbildung bei Krøyer und Tuxen, zwei der bedeutendsten Vertreter dieser Künstlerkolonie, ist im Sammlungskontext des MKdW daher besonders spannend: Diese Verbindung verdeutlicht den regen künstlerischen Austausch um 1900 im Westküstenraum. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
