The light of the setting sun seems hazy and the sky all around is covered by dense, colourfully glowing clouds. Below is the sea with a moderate swell, on which three small black steamers are cruising. The ships are simple and formed from just a few brushstrokes, allowing them to be literally absorbed by the colourful spectacle of nature. The dark smoke billowing luxuriantly from their stacks blends with the orange haze of the firmament, creating yet more nuances of colour.
