The light of the setting sun seems hazy and the sky all around is covered by dense, colourfully glowing clouds. Below is the sea with a moderate swell, on which three small black steamers are cruising. The ships are simple and formed from just a few brushstrokes, allowing them to be literally absorbed by the colourful spectacle of nature. The dark smoke billowing luxuriantly from their stacks blends with the orange haze of the firmament, creating yet more nuances of colour.
Emil Nolde had a deep fondness for watercolours. Despite his versatile oeuvre, which encompassed painting, drawing and experimenting with prints, there was no other technique in which he created as many works as in this one. Watercolours often produce unforeseen shapes and colour gradients to which the artist is forced to respond, depending on how much water is used – and Nolde had a penchant for using plenty. Besides the “material” pleasure of handling the paint, Nolde often considered its visual effects as well. An example of this is the sheet with the title “Steamer on the Sea / Sea in the Evening Light ”, in which he worked with complementary colours. These colours – in this case yellow and purple, but also orange and blue – are on opposite sides of the colour wheel and mutually boost each others’ intensity. They then appear particularly powerful on the paper.
The artist was born Emil Hansen in a place from which he later borrowed his professional name, namely the village of Nolde in what was then North Schleswig in the border region between Germany and Denmark. The artist later moved to Berlin with his wife Ada to make a name for himself in the city’s art scene. Nolde travelled extensively throughout his life. But he always remained true to his roots and returned frequently to his northern homeland. He finally built himself an artist’s house in Seebüll on the North Sea in the 1920s. PL

Darunter liegt bei mäßigem Wellengang das Meer, auf dem drei kleine schwarz kolorierte Dampfer kreuzen. Es sind ganz schlichte, aus wenigen Pinselstrichen geformte Schiffe, die von dem farbgewaltigen Naturspektakel förmlich absorbiert werden. Der dunkle Qualm, der üppig aus ihren Schornsteinen entweicht, verbindet sich mit dem orangenen Dunst am Firmament und lässt nochmals neue Farbnuancen entstehen.
Emil Nolde schätzte das Aquarell sehr. In keiner anderen Technik – und er war vielseitig aktiv: malte, zeichnete und experimentierte auch druckgrafisch – hat er so zahlreiche Werke geschaffen wie in dieser. Je nachdem, mit wie viel Wasser gearbeitet wird, und gerne verwendete Nolde dieses reichlich, entstehen beim Aquarellieren oft unvorhergesehene Form- und Farbverläufe, auf die der Künstler zu reagieren hat. Parallel zu diesem „materiellen“ Vergnügen im Umgang mit Farben hat Nolde viel über die optische Wirkung derselben nachgedacht. So wie in dem Blatt mit dem Titel „Dampfer auf dem Meer. Meer im Abendlicht“ hat er beispielsweise gerne mit Komplementärfarben gearbeitet. Solche Farben – hier sind es Gelb und Lila, aber auch Orange und Blau – liegen einander auf dem Farbkreis gegenüber und verstärken gegenseitig ihre Intensität. Auf dem Papier leuchten sie besonders stark.
Als Emil Hansen wurde der Künstler im Dorf Nolde im damaligen Nordschleswig im deutsch-dänischen Grenzgebiet. Sein späterer Künstlername bezieht sich auf seinen Herkunftsort, Später ging der Künstler mit seiner Frau Ada nach Berlin, um in der dortigen Kunstszene Fuß zu fassen. Zeit seines Lebens reiste Nolde viel. Dennoch ist er seiner Heimat stets verbunden geblieben und kehrte immer wieder in den Norden zurück. In den späten 1920er-Jahren errichtete er sich schließlich ein Künstlerhaus in Seebüll an der Nordsee. PL

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
