Max Liebermann had purchased a plot of land on the western banks of the Großer Wannsee, south-west of Berlin, in 1909. In the following year, he built a luxurious residence that he used as his summer home and which he referred to proudly as a “palace on the lake”. When Liebermann’s usual summer trips to the Dutch coast became impossible with the outbreak of the First World War, he continued his work en plein air in the spacious gardens at Wannsee.
