Art sometimes leads down long and very winding paths: thought to have been lost for 100 years, this oil study turned up in the Argentinian art trade in 2019. It was painted by the artist Otto H. Engel, who studied at the art academies in Berlin and Karlsruhe, in September 1904. Engel, one of the founders of the Berlin Secession along with Max Liebermann, first travelled to the North Sea island in 1901 and was so inspired by its unique culture and nature that he returned every summer and developed a rich set of fresh motifs there. The painting of a young Frisian woman in costume belongs to this group. The artist selected a bold detail for the oil study, which he painted impasto en plein air: standing on a lush green meadow close to the foremost plane in the picture, a young woman pulls her black shawl over her back. Blowing from behind, the wind loosens some of the strands of her hair under her headscarf and causes her skirt with its brown apron to billow. A cornfield in luminous yellow extends to the horizon under the scattered clouds of the summery sky. The picture is painted in an extremely fresh style, its overall impression vibrant and coherent. Engel’s model was the 17-year-old Ella Olufs (1887–1956) from Alkersum (today she would be one of the MKdW’s neighbours).
The study was acquired in 1920 by the Argentine art dealer Federico C. Müller, who specialised in international art and whose shop was located on Calle Florida, the elegant shopping boulevard in Buenos Aires. It was a surprising purchase, but only from today’s perspective. Engel’s work was highly appreciated by an international audience at the time and by no means limited to Germany. His paintings were shown in German-speaking countries, the World’s Fair in St. Louis (1904) and at exhibitions in Prague, Budapest, Ghent, Liège, Barcelona, Santiago de Chile, Rome, Venice and Rio de Janeiro. The Engel painting “Evening Beach Scene” (now at the MKdW) also featured at an exhibition in the Argentinian capital in 1913. WT

Manchmal geht Kunst weite, sehr verschlungene Wege: 2019 tauchte im argentinischen Kunsthandel diese Ölstudie auf, die seit 100 Jahren als verschollen galt. Im September 1904 hatte es der an den Kunstakademien in Berlin und Karlsruhe ausgebildete Maler Otto H. Engel auf Föhr gemalt. Engel, der neben Max Liebermann zu den Mitbegründern der Berliner Secession gehörte, war 1901 erstmalig auf die Nordseeinsel gekommen und begeisterte sich so für deren einzigartige Kultur und Natur, dass er jeden Sommer zurückkehrte und sich hier eine ganz neue Motivwelt erschloss. Zu dieser zählt auch das Bildnis der jungen Friesin in Tracht. Für die pastos im Freien gemalte Ölstudie wählte der Künstler einen kühnen Bildausschnitt: Auf einer saftig grünen Wiese stehend, nahe an die vorderste Bildebene gerückt, zieht die junge Frau ihr schwarzes Schultertuch über den Rücken. Der von hinten kommende Wind löst einzelne ihrer Haarsträhnen unter dem Kopftuch und bauscht ihren Rock mit der braunen Schürze auf. Bis zum Horizont erstreckt sich ein gelb leuchtendes Kornfeld unter dem locker bewölkten sommerlichen Himmel. Das Bild ist ausgesprochen frisch gemalt, der Gesamteindruck lebendig und stimmig. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
