Two fishermen in full working gear – oilskins and sou’westers – gaze out of a window. The incoming daylight illuminates their faces and upper bodies and sets them apart from the otherwise barely lit room. The play of light on the smooth surface of their oilskin jackets is captured in rough brushstrokes, but their facial features are rendered in rich detail. Their faces frozen in concentration, the two men are staring intently at what is happening outside: everyday village life, the weather or homecoming fishermen?
The paintings by the Skagen artists’ colony around Michael Ancher captured contemplative scenes unrelated to work, and not only the high-adrenaline, laborious and dangerous activity of fishermen and sailors on the coast and the high seas. Aside from domestic settings, the village pub belonging to Brøndums Hotel – referred to in the title as the “grocery shop” – was an important location for portraying village life.
Skagen artists showed a great fondness for painting interior scenes, which was partly due to the renewed popularity of genre painting from the Dutch Golden Age during the second half of the 19th century. Echoing the influential French art historian Théophile Thoré – who rediscovered the work of the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer – the Skagen painter and art historian Karl Madsen highlighted his outstanding importance for contemporary painting in 1884. The Danish art historian Emil Hannover boldly undertook a direct comparison between works by Vermeer and Ancher in an exhibition review from 1887.
Although far simpler in structure, the painting “Two Fishermen from Skagen at the Window in the Grocery Store” also reveals parallels to Veneer’s compositional style. Like here, the figures in his paintings are often placed at the window, with daylight streaming in from the side to highlight the materiality of their clothing and the furnishings. KS

Das einfallende Tageslicht erhellt ihre Gesichter und Oberkörper und hebt sie von dem ansonsten kaum ausgeleuchteten Raum ab. Das Lichtspiel auf der glatten Oberfläche ihrer Öljacken ist mit grobem Pinselstrich eingefangen, die Gesichtszüge sind detailreich wiedergegeben. Mit konzentriertem Gesichtsausdruck richten die Männer ihren Blick gezielt auf ein Geschehen im Außenraum: Alltägliches Dorfleben, die Witterung oder heimkehrende Fischer?
Die Maler der Skagener Künstlerkolonie rund um Michael Ancher erfassten in ihren Gemälden nicht nur die aktive, mühe- und gefahrvolle Tätigkeit der Fischer und Seeleute an der Küste und auf hoher See, sondern auch beschauliche Szenen jenseits der Arbeit. Neben dem häuslichen Umfeld war der zu Brøndums Hotel gehörende Dorfkrug – hier im Titel als ‚Lebensmittelgeschäft‘ genannt – ein wichtiger Schauplatz dörflichen Zusammenlebens.
Dass die Gattung des Interieurs unter den Skagen-Malern große Beliebtheit erfuhr, ist mitunter auf die Wiederentdeckung der Genremalerei des niederländischen Goldenen Zeitalters in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückzuführen. In Anlehnung an den einflussreichen französische Kunsthistoriker Théophile Thoré, der das Werk des holländischen Malers Jan Vermeer wiederentdeckt hatte, hob der Skagener Maler und Kunsthistoriker Karl Madsen 1884 dessen herausragende Bedeutung für die zeitgenössische Malerei hervor. In einer Ausstellungsrevue wagte der dänische Kunsthistoriker Emil Hannover 1887 einen unmittelbaren Vergleich zwischen Werken Vermeers und Anchers.
Obgleich in seiner Ausgestaltung viel schlichter, lässt auch das Gemälde "Zwei Fischer aus Skagen am Fenster im Lebensmittelgeschäft" Parallelen zu Vermeers Kompositionen erkennen. Wie hier sind dessen Bildfiguren häufig am Fenster platziert, wobei die Stofflichkeit der Kleidung und Einrichtungsgegenstände durch das seitlich einfallende Tageslicht wirkungsvoll in Szene setzt wird. Is it everyday village life in Skagen that captures their attention, is it fishermen returning home, or are they observing the weather? Is a storm brewing outside?

We don't know. The tense gaze of the two fishermen leaves room for our own imagination. But whatever they are observing, it probably ranges somewhere "between storm and calm": Between the tranquillity of village life and the drama of a storm raging over the sea and coast, which often ended fatally for the fishermen.

However, the two fishermen depicted in the picture are safe. The "grocery shop" mentioned in the title is the village pub belonging to Brøndum's hotel – an important setting for village life in Skagen. The artists of the Skagen artists' colony, including Michael Ancher and Peder Severin Krøyer, also socialised here. Scenes from the village pub repeatedly found their way into their work.

Wir wissen es nicht. Der gespannte Blick der beiden Fischer lässt Raum für die eigene Fantasie. Doch irgendwo „zwischen Sturm und Stille“ wird sich das Beobachtete verorten lassen: Zwischen der Beschaulichkeit des dörflichen Treibens und der Dramatik eines über Meer und Küste tobenden Unwetters, das für die Fischer oftmals auch tödlich endete.

Die beiden im Bild dargestellten Fischer befinden sich jedoch in Sicherheit. Bei dem im Titel genannten „Lebensmittelgeschäft“ handelt es sich um den zu Brøndums Hotel gehörenden Dorfkrug – ein wichtiger Schauplatz des dörflichen Zusammenlebens in Skagen. Auch die Künstler der Skagener Künstlerkolonie, darunter Michael Ancher oder Peder Severin Krøyer, verkehrten hier. Szenen aus dem Dorfkrug fanden wiederholt Eingang in ihre Motivwelt.

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
