In the midst of the flat marsh landscape, a little farmstead stands in the distance. Surrounded by a few trees, it defies the storm that has brewed beneath the expansive sky. A gigantic bank of clouds has pushed its way into the picture from the left and now occupies almost the entirety of the heavens. The radiant masses of air are in motion: like a gigantic fist, they extend out towards the right edge. The earth is invested with a corresponding energy and is traversed by a radial arrangement of furrows converging on the homestead. The artist has elicited an impressive dynamism from the coarse formal idiom of the woodcut, and the result is a veritably infernal image. On the right, a row of four or five trees bend in the roaring wind like bent matchsticks.
The sheet “Lonely Farm” is one of the ten woodcuts from the portfolio “Of Marsh and Coast”, which Max Kahlke published through the Max Hansen Verlag in Glückstadt in 1924. Depictions of the marsh represent a central theme in the work of this artist from Glückstadt, whose oeuvre encompasses paintings, watercolours and applied art (carvings, works in silver, book covers and posters) as well as printmaking – particularly woodcuts. As a young man, this son of a long-established local family of the Elbe marshes had already gathered impressions during extended hikes through the landscape with his brother. Kahlke studied for one semester at the academy of fine arts in Stuttgart and for two semesters at the Weimar academy of art – then came World War I. The artist dealt with his experiences as a soldier in the expressive religious paintings and dramatically charged landscapes that defined his work from that point forward.
In 1926 he and other artists from Schleswig-Holstein founded the group “De Warft” (Low German for “The Wharf”), which sought to provide a forum for art from Schleswig-Holstein during a period that was thoroughly unstable economically and politically. His contemporaries’ reception of his work contained a mixture of local patriotism and ethnic nationalist voices. Max Kahlke died of cancer at the age of just 36. The “De Warft” group broke up shortly afterwards. A few of its members, including Ingwer Paulsen (1883–1943) and Otto Thämer (1892–1975), actively continued to pursue their artistic careers under the Nazi regime. BR/PL

Inmitten der flachen Marschenlandschaft steht in der Ferne ein kleines Gehöft. Eingerahmt von ein paar Bäumen trotzt es dem Unwetter, das sich unter dem hohen Himmel zusammengebraut hat. Von links drängt sich ein riesiger Wolkenzug ins Bild, der fast das gesamte Firmament beherrscht. Die im Zentrum hell erstrahlenden Luftmassen sind in Bewegung, einer gewaltigen Faust gleich greifen sie zur rechten Seite aus. Eine entsprechende Energie wird der Erde zugewiesen, die von radial angeordneten Ackerfurchen, die auf den Hof zustreben, durchzogen wird. Der Künstler entlockt der groben Formensprache des Holzschnitts eine beeindruckende Dynamik, ein geradezu infernalisches Bild entsteht. Wie umgeknickte Streichhölzer biegen sich auf der rechten Seite vier oder fünf aufgereihte Bäume im tosenden Wind.
Das Blatt „Einsamer Hof“ ist einer von zehn Holzschnitten, welche Max Kahlke 1924 in der Mappe „Von Marsch und Küste“ im Max Hansen Verlag in Glückstadt veröffentlichte. Die Darstellung der Marsch ist ein zentrales Thema im Werk des gebürtigen Glückstädter Künstlers, dessen Œuvre Gemälde, Aquarelle, angewandte Kunst – Schnitzereien, Silberarbeiten, Buchumschläge oder Plakate – sowie Druckgrafik und dabei vor allem Holzschnitte umfasst. Bereits als junger Mann hatte der Sohn einer alteingesessenen Elbmarschfamilie mit seinem Bruder ausgiebige Wanderungen durch die Landschaft unternommen und Eindrücke gesammelt. Kahlke studierte ein Semester an der Akademie für bildende Künste in Stuttgart sowie zwei weitere Semester an der Weimarer Kunstakademie – dann kam der Erste Weltkrieg. Seine Erfahrungen als Soldat verarbeitete der Künstler in expressiven religiösen Bildern und dramatisch aufgeladenen Landschaften, die sein Werk fortan prägten. 
1926 gründete er mit anderen schleswig-holsteinischen Kunstschaffenden die Gruppe „De Warft“ (Plattdeutsch für „die Warft“), welche der schleswig-holsteinischen Kunst in einer wirtschaftlich wie politisch überaus instabilen Zeit ein Forum geben wollte. In der zeitgenössischen Rezeption mischten sich Lokalpatriotismus und völkische Stimmen. Max Kahlke starb mit nur 36 Jahren an einer Krebserkrankung. Die Gemeinschaft „De Warft“ löste sich wenig später auf. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
