The oil study opens up into a low-ceilinged, dimly lit room. A drowned fisherman is laid out on a plain wooden table with several people grouped around: some fellow fishermen stand at his feet, silent with shock. The family members, anguish and grief etched into their faces and gestures, are huddled around the upper body of the corpse. His sallow face is accentuated by the incoming daylight, while the yellow oilskin stands out glaringly against the muted and dark tones of his surroundings.
Michael Ancher is considered one of the most prominent members of the Skagen artists’ colony, and his paintings often focus on the reality of life and everyday routines in the local fishing community. He had a particular interest in their work as lifesavers and the frequently dramatic rescue operations. The oil study “The Drowned Fisherman” is one of several preparatory pieces for an eponymous and monumental painting, which Ancher produced a year later – in 1896. It is now owned by the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, but is on permanent loan to Skagens Museum. The painting is the final piece in a six-part series, which Ancher began in 1876 to document the various stages in the rescue mission. Some of the fishermen were not recovered alive in the end.
Although less elaborate in terms of motif and painting, the oil study already points to the compositional and dramaturgical structure of the subsequent painting. The arrangement and posture of the portrayed figures, their unidirectional gaze and the purposeful use of light skilfully draw the viewer’s attention to the dead man and the grieving widow. Borrowing from the canon of Renaissance and Baroque painting, Ancher’s academic background is evident in the picture’s structure. “The Drowned Fisherman” is nonetheless a prime example of overcoming these constraints through its truthful and simple, yet sensitive, depiction, which adheres to the tenets of Realism. Ein ertrunkener Fischer liegt aufgebahrt auf einem einfachen Holztisch, um den sich mehrere Personen gruppieren: Zu seinen Füßen stehen in stummer Betroffenheit einige Fischerkameraden. Die Familienangehörigen, in deren Mimik und Gestik sich Schrecken und Trauer spiegeln, drängen sich um den Oberkörper des Toten. Sein fahles Gesicht wird durch das einfallende Tageslicht betont, während sich das gelbe Ölzeug grell von der in gedämpften und dunklen Farbtönen gehaltenen Umgebung abhebt.
Michael Ancher gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Skagener Künstlerkolonie und widmete sich in seiner Malerei vielfach der dortigen Lebens- und Alltagsrealität der Fischer. Sein besonderes Interesse galt deren Wirken als Lebensretter und den oft dramatischen Rettungsaktionen. Die Ölstudie „Der ertrunkene Fischer“ ist eine von mehreren Vorarbeiten für ein gleichnamiges, monumentales Gemälde, das Ancher ein Jahr später – 1896 – schuf.  Dieses gehört heute zum Bestand des Statens Museum for Kunst in Kopenhagen, befindet sich jedoch als Dauerleihgabe im Skagens Museum. Es bildet den Abschluss einer sechsteiligen, ab 1876 entstandenen Serie, in welcher Ancher die verschiedenen Etappen einer Rettungsaktion schildert. An deren Ende konnten einige der Fischer mitunter nur noch tot geborgen werden.
Obgleich motivisch und malerisch weniger ausgearbeitet, lässt die Ölstudie bereits den kompositorischen und dramaturgischen Aufbau des späteren Gemäldes erkennen. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
