The symbiosis between humankind and nature possesses a central significance in Otto Mueller’s oeuvre. In addition to his characteristic yellow nudes (see here, e.g., inv. no. 8 MUE 01), the work “Girl between Leafy Plants” – one of a total of only five woodcuts that Mueller produced – also testifies to a longing for a paradisiacal state. In this white-line wood engraving, a female nude sitting on the grass is framed by the fleshy leaves of an exotic-looking plant. The stylised depiction of the female figure provides the composition with clarity and a striking effect. The figure’s silhouette formed out of simple lines is depicted in profile while her head is seen frontally. This treatment reflects Mueller’s interest in Ancient Egyptian Art, which fascinated him throughout his life. The clear lines make the female figure appear almost stiff, sometimes angular, and generate a strong contrast with the soft and organic-looking leafy plants. The collection of the MKdW also contains Mueller’s print “Boy between Leafy Plants”, which suggests the artist’s intense engagement with foreign cultures and their reception. The high appreciation in which his pictorial inventions were held is also expressed in the fact that both motifs were reprinted in limited editions after the artist's death.
After training as a lithographer in Görlitz, the German expressionist Otto Mueller enrolled at Dresden’s academy of art. However, he quickly turned away from academic painting and developed his own style as an autodidact. After moving to Berlin in 1908, he became familiar with the expressionist artist group “Brücke” and became a member. Depicting the unity of humanity and nature was a central theme of the “Brücke” artists. With this subject matter, the artist group linked themselves with a range of movements seeking to reform the way people lived and propagating a return to nature, among other things. Together with other “Brücke” artists, including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938), Erich Heckel (1883–1970) and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884–1976), Mueller travelled to the Moritzburg lakes region in 1910 and 1911. The artists’ longing for an earthly paradise displayed itself there – in their archaic manner of living as well as the works they created. MN

B. hier Inv.-Nr. 8 MUE 01) zeugt auch das Werk „Mädchen zwischen Blattpflanzen“ – einer von insgesamt nur fünf Holzschnitten, die Mueller gefertigt hat – von der Sehnsucht nach einem paradiesischen Zustand. Die Silhouette des von einfachen Linien geformten Frauenkörpers ist im Profil dargestellt, während der Kopf frontal erscheint. Diese Ausarbeitung spiegelt Muellers Interesse an der Kunst der alten Ägypter wider, die ihn zeitlebens faszinierte. Der Frauenkörper wirkt durch die klaren Linien beinahe steif, teils kantig, und erzeugt einen starken Kontrast zu den weich und organisch anmutenden Blattgewächsen. In der Sammlung des MKdW ist auch Muellers Blatt „Knabe zwischen Blattpflanzen“ vertreten, welches die intensive Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers mit fremden Kulturen und deren Rezeption andeutet. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
