A pale sandy beach, made even broader as the low tide ebbs away, extends to the sea in the right background and leads to the small Dutch fishing village of Katwijk aan Zee in the left background. A sailing ship anchoring there stands out prominently, corresponding with the 14-metre Vuurbaak lighthouse, the second oldest in the Netherlands, on the left. Shown from the back, a woman in dark attire who seems to be strolling along the beach in the middle ground enlivens the scene. A closer look reveals several clues that this woman may be an artist, painting plein-air studies of the village in the dunes. The size of the dark parasol is indicative of one that a painter would use to reduce the backlight. It might be the artist’s sister, namely the landscape, interior and still life painter Marie Mathilde Dücker. The German-Baltic artist Eugène Gustav Dücker manages to capture a harmonious mood, which is enhanced by the warm tonality of the greyish-blue and beige colour range. The oil study was probably produced directly in nature.
After studying at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts (1858–1862), a 6-year travel stipend gave Dücker the opportunity to continue his education in Karlsruhe and Munich and to travel through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. A residence of Düsseldorf since 1864, he succeeded Oswald Achenbach as professor of the landscape class in 1872. During his 44 years of teaching, he and his students, including the painters Fritz Overbeck, Max Clarenbach, German Grobe, Franz Korwan and Heinrich Petersen-Angeln, whose works also feature at MKdW, turned their backs on the dramatic scenes staged by Oswald and Andreas Achenbach. Embracing Naturalism, they found their motifs in beach landscapes and the placid sea, attaching great importance to depicting atmospheric moments in painstaking detail. WT

Ein heller Sandstrand, der durch das bei Ebbe ablaufende Wasser noch breiter geworden ist, erstreckt sich im rechten Hintergrund bis zum Meer und führt im linken Hintergrund bis zu dem kleinen niederländischen Fischerort Katwijk aan Zee. Dort bildet ein vor Anker liegendes Segelschiff einen markanten Akzent,  mit dem auf der linken Seite der 14 Meter hoch aufragende Leuchtturm Vuurbaak korrespondiert, der zweitälteste der Niederlande. Belebt wird die Szenerie im Mittelgrund durch eine dunkel gekleidete Frau in Rückansicht, die am Strand entlang zu laufen scheint. Bei näherer Betrachtung sprechen mehrere Indizien dafür, dass es sich bei der Person um eine Malerin handelt, die mit Blick auf den in den Dünen liegenden Ort Freilichtstudien betreibt. Die Größe des dunklen Schirms entspricht derjenigen eines Malschirms, der das Gegenlicht mindert. Vielleicht handelt es sich um die Schwester des Künstlers, nämlich die Landschafts-, Interieur- und Stillebenmalerin Marie Mathilde Dücker. Dem deutsch-baltischen Künstler Eugène Gustav Dücker gelingt es, eine harmonische atmosphärische Stimmung einzufangen, zu der die warme Tonalität der graublauen und beigen Farbpalette beiträgt. Die Ölstudie entstand vermutlich direkt in der Natur.
Nach einem Studium an der St. Petersburger Kunstakademie (1858–1862) bot ein 6-jähriges Reisestipendium Dücker die Möglichkeit, eine Weiterbildung in Karlsruhe und München zu absolvieren sowie Frankreich, Belgien, die Niederlande und Italien zu bereisen. Seit 1864 in Düsseldorf ansässig, trat er 1872 die Nachfolge von Oswald Achenbach als Professor der Landschaftsklasse an. Während seiner 44-jährigen Lehrtätigkeit setzten sich er und seine Schüler, darunter die ebenfalls mit Werken im MKdW vertretenen Maler Fritz Overbeck, Max Clarenbach, German Grobe, Franz Korwan und Heinrich Petersen-Angeln, von den dramatischen Inszenierungen, wie sie von Oswald und Andreas Achenbach vorgetragen wurden, ab. Mit Hinwendung zum Naturalismus wurden motivisch Strandlandschaften und die ruhige See entdeckt und großer Wert auf die Herausarbeitung feinster Stimmungsmomente gelegt. WT

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
