In Emil Nolde’s numerous paintings and watercolours, he captures the infinitely varied play of the elements in glowing, clear, delicate and repeatedly changing atmospheres of light and colour. This theme also occupied him in his prints, which Nolde considered highly important and in which he naturally worked primarily in pure black and white. At the same time, his seascapes – regardless of the technique used to create them – repeatedly feature little steamers gliding along the horizon line like tiny little nutshells composed from the simplest forms. As simple as an image like that of the etching merely entitled “Steamer” may appear, Nolde has employed the means at his disposal in a carefully considered manner: the hatching in the clouds of steam suggest volume, and the lines of the waves are few in number, but they extend out to the front edge of the picture to convey an impression of three-dimensional depth. A little ship on the open sea creates room for associations: what if we found ourselves on it, alone with ourselves and the elements?
Nolde, who was born in the land between the North Sea and the Baltic, was inspired by the sea throughout his life. For the artist it was the archetypical embodiment of a “primal force” and “primitivity”, two concepts which he invokes again and again in his biography, which is already grandiloquent as it is. In it, Nolde stylises himself as a “German” artist, as someone taking a stand against everything impressionistic, ephemeral and modern.(1) However, to his dismay, the Nazi regime never bestowed their recognition on him. Instead, Nolde was deprecated as a “degenerate” artist – and this defined the generally extremely positive perception of him down to the very recent past.(2) PL

In seiner Malerei und den Aquarellen, die Emil Nolde zahlreich hervorbrachte, fing er das unendlich abwechslungsreiche Spiel der Elemente in glühenden, klaren, zarten, immer wieder unterschiedlichen Licht- und Farbstimmungen ein. Das Thema beschäftigte ihn auch in seiner Druckgrafik, der Nolde ebenfalls große Bedeutung beimaß und in der er naturgemäß meist rein in Schwarzweiß arbeitete. Dabei tauchen in seinen Meeresbildern – egal in welcher Technik diese gefertigt sind – immer wieder kleine Dampfer auf, die der Künstler nussschalengleich aus einfachsten Formen gestaltet und entlang der Horizontlinie gleiten lässt. So simpel eine Darstellung wie in der schlicht als „Dampfer“ betitelten Radierung auch erscheint, Nolde hat die ihm zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel wohlüberlegt eingesetzt: Die Schraffuren in den Dampfwolken deuten Volumen an, die wenigen, jedoch weit zum vorderen Bildrand ausgreifenden Wellenlinien vermitteln den Eindruck von Tiefenräumlichkeit. Ein kleines Schiff auf dem offenen Meer – das schafft Raum für Assoziationen: Was, wenn man sich selbst darauf befände, allein mit sich und den Elementen?

Zu seiner Bestürzung wurde ihm die Anerkennung der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber jedoch nicht zuteil. Vielmehr wurde Nolde als „entarteter“ Künstler abgewertet, was seine im Allgemeinen überaus positive Wahrnehmung bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit prägte.(2) PL

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
