A gently undulating landscape extends to the right of the picture, bathed in the soft light of the late summer sunset. To the left, the viewer’s gaze is hemmed in by a white thatched house, its windows reflecting the golden evening glow. The house seems very solid, occupying the left side of the picture. But several splashes of green interrupt this architectural, man-made focus and frame it on either side. Among them are climbing plants and flowering hollyhocks that cover parts of the façade, while trees or bushes provide a fresh green finishing touch to the right side of the house, transitioning into the landscape behind. Starting directly from the lower edge of the painting, wagon tracks lead into the depths of the picture up to the middle ground. Two people are discernible there – possibly an adult and a child – whose onward journey remains concealed from the viewer behind the crest of the hill.
Engel wrote in a letter to his father in September 1904: “It gave neither me nor my friend Feld any peace. We simply had to visit Witsum to paint once. [...] It was a wonderful sun. When we got there, I painted a picture of the old house on canvas and another mood study on a piece of cardboard.”
Adopting a very unpretentious tone, the artist vividly describes how he journeyed through the landscape on his way to Föhr and was guided by his immediate impressions. His painting utensils stowed away in light baggage, he hikes over the island and occasionally takes a carriage to get to his motifs. Directly in nature, he produces lively and atmospheric pictures of the Föhr landscape.
Engel captures a richly contrasting landscape in just a few colours: the dull brown of the earth in the foreground and in the wagon tracks, together with the severe green of the lawn in front of the house, are set against the golden glow of the windowpanes and the middle ground. The artist juxtaposes cold and warm hues in an almost alternating rhythm and in doing so achieves a remarkable depth, superseded only by the sensitive and skilful harmony of colour that encapsulates the inimitably atmospheric evening mood.
Engel never abandoned the strict separation between preparing studies and producing paintings in the studio, which was taught at the academies. He completed his studies en plein air, but used them only to prepare for the pieces he painted in his Berlin studio. The latter were sold as his source of livelihood, while the studies were merely a means to an end and not perceived as works of art. But he turned away from this practice as a co-founder of the Berlin Secession, which led to several years of intense exploration of French Impressionism and the incorporation of some aspects into his painting. The vivid colours and the immediacy of his brushwork are nevertheless preserved in this magnificent study. KP

Getaucht in das weiche Licht des Sonnenuntergangs, erstreckt sich zur rechten Bildseite eine spätsommerliche, leicht hügelige Landschaft. Den ausschweifenden Blick des Betrachters begrenzt links ein weißes reetgedecktes Haus, in dessen Fenstern sich das goldene Abendlicht spiegelt. Ganz massiv wirkt das Haus, wie es die linke Bildseite flächig einnimmt. Dieser architektonische, von Menschen geformte Schwerpunkt wird jedoch durch mehrere grüne Akzente unterbrochen und zu beiden Seiten eingefasst. So nehmen rankende Pflanzen und blühende Stockrosen Teile der Fassade ein, Bäume oder Büsche setzen rechts des Hauses einen frischen grünen Schlusspunkt und leiten in die dahinter liegende Landschaft über. Direkt vom unteren Bildrand ausgehend, führen Wagenspuren in die Tiefe des Bildes bis in den Mittelgrund hinein. Dort sind schemenhaft zwei Personen zu erkennen – womöglich ein Erwachsener und ein Kind – deren weiterer Weg für den Betrachter hinter dem Hügelkamm verborgen bleibt. 
Im September 1904 schreibt Engel in einem Brief an seinen Vater: „Es hatte mir keine Ruhe gelassen und auch meinem Freund Feld nicht, wir mußten einmal in Witsum malen. […] Es war wundervolle Sonne. Da habe ich ein Bild von dem alten Hause auf Leinwand und noch eine Stimmungsstudie auf einem Pappendeckel gemalt.“  
Der Künstler beschreibt hier anschaulich und unprätentiös wie er auf seinen Reisen nach Föhr in der Landschaft unterwegs war und sich von seinen unmittelbaren Eindrücken hat leiten lassen. Mit den Malutensilien im leichten Gepäck läuft er über die Insel oder lässt sich mitunter auch zu seinen Motiven mit der Kutsche fahren. Direkt in der Natur entstehen so lebhafte und atmosphärische Bilder der Föhrer Landschaft.
Mit wenigen Farben hat Engel eine klingend kontrastierende Landschaft erfasst: Das dumpfe Braun der Erde im Vordergrund und in den Wagenspuren zusammen mit dem herben Grün der Wiese vor dem Haus stehen dem goldenen Leuchten der Fensterfläche und des Mittelgrundes gegenüber. Kalte und warme Töne spielt der Künstler beinahe in einem rhythmischen Nebeneinander aus und erzielt damit eine besondere Tiefenwirkung, aber mehr noch eine sensible und kundige Farbharmonie, die eine unverwechselbare atmosphärische Abendstimmung festhält.
Engel hat für sich nie von der an den Akademien gelehrte, strenge Trennung von Studie und Ausführung eines Gemäldes im Atelier abgewendet. Er fertigte Studien in der freien Natur, nutzte diese jedoch nur als Vorarbeiten für seine Gemäldefassungen im heimischen Berliner Atelier. Letztere waren sein Broterwerb und wurden verkauft, seine Studien waren für ihn nur Mittel zum Zweck und nicht als Kunstwerk wahrgenommen. Nachdem Engel sich als Mitbegründer der Berliner Secession für einige Jahre intensiv mit dem französischen Impressionismus beschäftigt hatte und einige Aspekte in seine Malerei einfließen ließ, wandte er sich jedoch wieder davon ab. Die Lebendigkeit der Farben und die Unmittelbarkeit des Pinselduktus sind ihm dennoch in dieser herrlichen Studie erhalten geblieben. KP

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
