A wave only appears to spill over the rim of a tilted plastic tub, because quite evidently the supposed wave is solid. It was carved from wood and then painted. The water is in motion, but still solidified. Here, the shapes of the waves appear just as reluctant to fit into a laundry tub as the crests of white spray. We are apparently confronted instead with a primordial force that seems strangely penned in.
In his piece entitled “Big Wave”, Volker Tiemann refers to one of the most famous works in art history, namely “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Dating from around 1831, the coloured woodblock print – which was received enthusiastically by the Impressionists and Art Nouveau artists in particular – shows the motif of a breaking wave against the backdrop of Mount Fuji. Seemingly gigantic in Hokusai’s cut, Tiemann’s work shrinks this surge and transposes it to the profoundly banal context of a laundry tub.
The manner in which the object is presented on its base should also be perceived as a playful nod to the marks of distinction in art history: instead of a classic plinth, a chest of drawers laid on its side peeks out from beneath the draped folds of a white fabric covering. The everyday object is only inadequately veiled and – seemingly inadvertently, but in fact deliberately – attracts attention in the exhibition hall.
The superficial humour and lightness of the arrangement contrast with the sculptor Tiemann’s elaborate craftsmanship. His works should always be perceived as an ironic questioning of art historical and museum conventions. To what extent do the presentation and materiality contribute to our perception of an object as a work of art? Volker Tiemann, who studied at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel, sees his roots in classical sculpture, although he repeatedly adopts positions that critically question the genre. Eine Welle schwappt nur scheinbar über den Rand einer in Schräglage geratenen Plastikwanne, denn ganz offensichtlich ist die vermeintliche Woge fest. Sie wurde aus Holz geschnitzt und bemalt. Das Wasser ist in Bewegung, doch zugleich erstarrt wiedergegeben. Hierbei wollen die Formen der Wellen ebenso wenig in eine Wäschewanne passen wie die Kronen weißer Gischt. Eher scheinen wir es mit einer Urgewalt zu tun zu haben, die seltsam eingepfercht wirkt. 
Mit dem Werk „Große Woge“ bezieht sich Volker Tiemann auf eines der bekanntesten Werke der Kunstgeschichte, nämlich auf „Die große Welle vor Kanagawa“ des japanischen Künstlers Katsushika Hokusai. Der um 1831 entstandene Farbholzschnitt, der vor allem von den Impressionisten und Jugendstil-Künstlern mit Begeisterung aufgenommen wurde, zeigt das Motiv einer sich brechenden Welle vor dem Hintergrund des Berges Fuji. In Tiemanns Werk wurde diese im Schnitt Hokusais riesenhaft anmutende Woge geschrumpft und in den zutiefst banalen Kontext der Wäschewanne übertragen.

Der vordergründige Humor und die Leichtigkeit des Arrangements stehen im Gegensatz zur aufwendigen handwerklichen Fertigung durch den Bildhauer Tiemann. Seine Werke sind immer wieder auch als ironische Befragung kunsthistorischer und musealer Gepflogenheiten zu verstehen. Inwiefern trägt die Präsentation und Materialität dazu bei, dass wir einen Gegenstand als Kunstwerk wahrnehmen? Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
