A young woman, depicted in profile, sits on the beach in a black one-piece swimsuit, relaxing as she reads a book. Despite her seated posture, there is something dynamic about her form: from the bent knees to the narrow neck to her head leaning over the book, her body almost constitutes a circle. The portion of the scene that the artist has chosen to depict is so small that the surrounding space creates its lively effect as a field of colour rather than the scene of the action. The pink towel caressing her body, covered with brown spots and crossed by blue lines, echoes the fundamental colours of the scene. Despite the sense of proximity, the viewer does not feel as if they are disturbing her.
Swedish artist Sigrid Hjertén, who had completed her training as a drawing teacher in Stockholm, met her future husband, painter Isaac Grünewald, in the same city in the spring of 1909, at an exhibition where her textile designs were on display. Both of them subsequently moved to Paris, where they quickly rose to become Henri Matisse’s favourite pupils at his Académie in the city, a centre of the Fauvist movement. Their works were also featured at exhibitions in Germany: in 1915, the couple were invited by the gallery owner Herwarth Walden (1879–1941) to the Der Sturm gallery in Berlin, the avant-garde hub of its day. Both of them exhibited works there on multiple occasions.
In 1917, Hjertén and Grünewald made a study trip to the Danish island of Fanø in the North Sea. This gave rise to Hjertén’s “Reading girl” and Grünewald’s paintings “From the bathing beach”, “Bathing life”, “Fanø” and “Bathing activities, Fanø” – all of which can be found in the MKdW collection. Characteristic features of Hjertén’s novel conception of painting are the luminous, decorative colour fields, the plain, almost naïve-seeming figurative style and the light expressive touch. Her work was first exhibited in May 1918, at the Expressionistutställing held at Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm. Whereas Grünewald’s works were repeatedly praised as “technically polished and artistically promising”(1) by contemporary critics, Hjertén’s style was harshly attacked for its simplification of forms and reduction of figurative features – criteria which apply equally to Grünewald’s work. Das braun gepunktete, mit blauen Linien durchzogene rosafarbene Badetuch, das ihren Körper umschmeichelt, nimmt die Grundfarben des Kolorits auf. Trotz der gefühlten Nähe hat der Betrachter nicht den Eindruck, sie zu stören. 
Die schwedische Künstlerin Sigrid Hjertén, die ihre Zeichenlehrerinnen-Ausbildung in Stockholm abgeschlossen hatte, lernte ihren späteren Mann, den Maler Isaac Grünewald, im Frühjahr 1909 in der schwedischen Hauptstadt auf einer Ausstellung kennen, in der ihre Textilentwürfe präsentiert wurden. Beide gingen im Anschluss nach Paris, wo sie schnell zur Lieblingsschülerin von Henri Matisse in seiner Pariser Académie, einem Zentrum des Fauvismus, avancierte. Auch in Deutschland waren ihre Werke auf Ausstellungen präsent: 1915 wurde das Paar vom Galeristen Herwarth Walden (1879–1941) in die Berliner Galerie „Der Sturm“, in das Avantgarde-Zentrum der damaligen Zeit, eingeladen. Mehrfach präsentierten die beiden dort Werke.
1917 verlebten Hjertén und Grünewald einen Studienaufenthalt auf der dänischen Nordseeinsel Fanø. In diesem Zusammenhang entstanden Hjerténs „Lesendes Mädchen“ sowie Grünewalds Gemälde „Vom Badestrand“, „Badeleben, Fanø“ und „Badebetrieb, Fanø“ – allesamt Werke, die sich in der Sammlung des MKdW befinden. Charakteristisch für Hjerténs neuartige Bildauffassung sind die leuchtenden, dekorativen Farbflächen, der schlichte, fast naiv anmutende Figurenstil und die Leichtigkeit des Ausdrucks. Ihr Werk wurde erstmals im Mai 1918 in der „Expressionistutställing“ in Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm präsentiert. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
