On 28 June 1902, Otto H. Engel wrote just one sentence to his wife Olga about his artistic progress on Föhr and the preliminary work on his painting “On a Holiday Morning”:
“Here is what the picture will look like, the one for which I have been painting studies.”(1) By way of explanation, his letter includes the sketched composition of his subsequent large-format work. This single sentence gives us clues about how the painting came into being. Engel’s method involved producing several studies on site, often outdoors in nature. Some of them were drawings that he jotted onto loose sheets or in a sketchbook. Others were breezy, small format oil studies that he produced with rapid brushstrokes. Once the summer months Engel spent on Föhr were over, the artist worked on the final painted version of the work in his Berlin studio. Four oil studies and the sketch from the letter to his wife represented the preliminary work for the large painting with its almost life-size portrayal of the protagonists.
In this picture, Otto H. Engel indulges his fascination for traditional Föhr costume and gives us some insight into the thoroughly complicated process of putting it on. The mother at the centre is binding her daughter’s headscarf, while the younger woman leans against an adjacent tree, watching intently. The women are shown facing us, but at different angles, so that the two variants of costume – festive dress and Sunday best – are revealed in detail. On the left we see the festive version with its white skirt, a multiply pleated shawl and the sizeable curb chain with four buttons on the chest and two on each sleeve. The warm golden hue of the earrings and the brooch on the skirt are particularly eye-catching. The young woman in Sunday best is wearing a similar one. Here, though, the skirt is iridescent green and she wears the shawl tied crosswise in front of her chest. The figure of the mother shows clearly that a section of the shawl is thrown over the shoulder and hangs down over the back as a triangle. There is another detail in the mother’s costume: a small red bonnet, embroidered with black pearls, is placed on top of the headscarf. Married women wear these bonnets to this day. The German phrase “unter der Haube” or “under the bonnet” to mean married comes from this practice.
The artist places a definite focus on a detailed rendition of the costumes and all their different forms. The scene of the action is almost an afterthought in comparison: Engel uses loose brushstrokes to create a leafy background in pastel shades of green. Bright patches of sunlight penetrate the lime tree’s dense foliage, creating vivid spots on the earthy ground. KP

Am 28. Juni 1902 schrieb Otto H. Engel an seine Frau Olga nur einen Satz über seine malerischen Fortschritte auf Föhr und die Vorarbeit an seinem Gemälde „Am Festtagsmorgen“:
 „Hier, so wird das Bild werden, wofür ich Studien male.“(1) Zur weiteren Erläuterung zeigt eine Skizze in seinem Brief den Bildaufbau des später großformatig ausgeführten Werkes. Es ist nur dieser kurze Satz, der uns dennoch einiges an Informationen über die Genese des Gemäldes erfahren lässt. Engels Arbeitsweise beinhaltete, dass er mehrere Studien vor Ort, gerne auch in der Natur, anfertigte. Das konnten Zeichnungen sein, die er auf einzelnen Blättern oder direkt in seinem Skizzenbuch festhielt. Ebenso gehörten luftige mit raschen Pinselduktus erfasste Ölstudien in kleineren Formaten dazu. Lagen die auf Föhr verbrachten sommerlichen Wochen hinter Engel, arbeitete der Künstler in seinem Berliner Atelier an der endgültigen Gemäldefassung des Werkes. Vier Ölstudien und die Skizze aus dem Brief an seine Frau bildeten die Vorarbeiten des großzügigen Gemäldes, das die Protagonistinnen beinahe in Lebensgröße zeigt. 
Otto H. Engel lebt in diesem Bild seine große Faszination für die Föhrer Tracht aus und gibt uns die Möglichkeit einen Einblick in das durchaus komplizierte Anlegen zu erhalten. Die Mutter in der Mitte bindet der Tochter das Kopftuch, während die Jüngere an den Baum gelehnt daneben steht und zusieht. Die Frauen sind uns in ihrer Körperhaltung unterschiedlich zugewandt, sodass die beiden dargestellten Varianten der Tracht – die Festtags- und die Sonntagstracht – en détail betrachtet werden können. Ganz links sehen wir die Festtagstracht mit weißer Schürze, dem in viele Falten gelegten Schultertuch und der großen Panzerkette mit vier Knöpfen vor der Brust und jeweils zwei Ärmelknöpfen. Besonders sticht der warme Goldton der Ohrringe und der Brosche an der Schürze hervor. Eine Ähnliche trägt auch die junge Frau in Festtagstracht. Hier jedoch ist die Schürze grün changierend und sie trägt das Schultertuch vor der Brust über Kreuz gebunden. Dass dabei ein Teil des Tuches als Dreieck über die Schultern den Rücken hinab reicht, ist gut bei der Mutter in der Mitte zu erkennen. Bei ihr finden wir ein weiteres wichtiges Detail der Tracht: Das Kopftuch ist noch um die Haube, ein kleines rotes, mit schwarzen Perlen besticktes Stück Stoff, ergänzt. Verheiratete Frauen tragen bis heute derlei Hauben, um buchstäblich zu zeigen, dass sie unter der Haube sind. 
Der Künstler legt einen deutlichen Fokus auf die detaillierte Darstellung der Tracht in ihren verschiedenen Formen. Demgegenüber wird der Ort des Geschehens zur Nebensächlichkeit: Mit lockeren Pinselstrichen schafft Engel einen belaubten Hintergrund in pastelligen Grüntönen. Hell leuchtende Sonnenflecken durchdringen das dichte Laub des Lindenbaumes und erhellen den erdigen Boden. KP

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
