An old woman is seated at a plain, elegant table in a sun-bathed room. Leaning on her forearms and pinching her eyebrows into a deep frown, she writes meticulously in the notebook in front of her. Aside from the open inkwell and other writing utensils, we see a bible and a luxuriant bouquet of flowers on the mirror-smooth tabletop. The furniture arrangement is peculiar. It seems almost as if the elderly lady on her chair is wedged between the table and the wall and that the main subject of the picture is not her but the colourful flowers in the vase. This impression is strongly related to the composition of light and colour in the painting. Although the window itself is not shown, the daylight streaming in through the left half of the picture dominates the entire composition. The incoming light transforms the wall into an abstract expanse of colour in which bright orange and yellowish ochre merge into rusty red and reddish brown, reaching a final crescendo in a dark violet-red in the right half of the picture. Painted impasto, the yellowish-white, pink and yellow-orange-red blossoms of the bouquet reveal their dazzling splendour against this wine-red section of the wall. The fresh green leaves framing the petals stand out in particular, contrasting exquisitely with the reddish wall. In turn, the tabletop appears enlivened by an interplay of brownish-violet shadow and ochre patches of sun that drift into yellow. So although the painting is predominantly kept in earthy colours that are atypical of Impressionism (ochre, brown, rusty red), the hints of Impressionist influences remain nevertheless in the dynamic technique and the use of complementary contrasts (yellow-violet, red-green). It is also impossible to assign a specific colour to any of the pictorial elements. For instance, the violet of the tabletop blends in the old woman’s face with the ochre, orange and red hues of the wall, and her hair even shows vague hints of the green otherwise used for the leaves on the petals. This ingenious use of colour blurs the boundaries between the person depicted and the space in which she is located and hence permits the figure and the interior to appear as equally important pictorial elements.
Anna Ancher was the only member of the prominent Skagen artists’ colony who actually hailed from the fishing village in the northernmost reaches of Denmark. Her painting “Ane Hedvig Brøndum Sitting at the Table” is a portrait of her mother, probably sitting in the “red parlour” at Brøndums Hotel. Ancher’s parents owned the establishment where many of the artists who came to Skagen in the 1880s and 1890s found lodgings and used it as a meeting place. Ane Hedvig Brøndum became one of her daughter’s favourite models after retiring from the hotel business at an advanced age. Anna Ancher’s many portraits of her mother are among the artist’s best-known and possibly most radical works, in which the materialisation of light as animated expanses of colour assumes an almost abstract quality. In einem sonnendurchfluteten Raum sitzt eine alte Frau an einem schlichten, eleganten Holztisch. Auf ihre Unterarme gestützt und die Augenbrauen zu einer tiefen Stirnfalte zusammengezogen, schreibt sie mit großer Sorgfalt in das vor ihr liegende Heft. Auf der spiegelglatten Tischplatte befinden sich neben dem offenen Tintenfass und anderen Schreibutensilien eine Bibel und ein üppiger Blumenstrauß. Die Anordnung der Möbel ist ungewöhnlich. Es scheint beinahe so, als sei die ältere Dame auf ihrem Stuhl zwischen Tisch und Zimmerwand eingeklemmt und der eigentliche Hauptgegenstand des Bildes sei nicht sie, sondern die farbenprächtigen Blumen in der Vase. Dieser Eindruck ist eng mit der komplexen Licht- und Farbregie des Gemäldes verknüpft. Zwar ist das Fenster selbst nicht dargestellt, doch bestimmt das aus der linken Bildhälfte einfallende Tageslicht die gesamte Komposition. Der Lichteinfall verwandelt die Zimmerwand in eine abstrakte Farbfläche, in der leuchtendes Orange und gelbliches Ocker in Rostrot und Rotbraun übergehen und sich in der rechten Bildhälfte zu einem dunklen Violett-Rot steigern. Vor diesem weinroten Wandabschnitt entfalten die mit pastosem Farbauftrag gemalten gelblich-weißen, rosa und gelb-orange-roten Blüten des Blumenstraußes ihre schillernde Pracht. Insbesondere der frische Grünton der Blumenblätter, der einen exquisiten Komplementärkontrast zu der rötlichen Wand bildet, sticht hervor. Die Tischplatte wiederum ist durch ein Spiel von braun-violetten Schatten und ockerfarbenen, sich ins Gelb steigernden Sonnenflecken belebt. So ist das Bild zwar überwiegend mit erdigen, für den Impressionismus untypischen Farben gemalt (Ocker, Braun, Rostrot), gleichzeitig deuten sich jedoch impressionistische Einflüsse in der dynamischen Malweise und der Verwendung von Komplementärkontrasten (Gelb-Violett, Rot-Grün) an. Zudem ist es unmöglich, einem Bildelement eine konkrete Farbe zuzuschreiben. Im Gesicht der alten Frau, beispielsweise, mischt sich das Violette der Tischplatte mit den Ocker-, Orange-, und Rottönen der Wand und in ihren Haaren zeichnet sich sogar eine leichte Note des Grüntones ab, mit dem auch die Blumenblätter gemalt wurden. Diese ausgeklügelte Farbgebung verwischt die Grenzen zwischen der dargestellten Person und dem Raum, in dem sie sich befindet, und lässt somit Figur und Interieur als gleichwertige Bildelemente in Erscheinung treten.

Anna Anchers zahlreiche Porträts ihrer Mutter gehören zu den bekanntesten und möglicherweise radikalsten Werken der Künstlerin, in denen das Materialisieren von Licht mittels belebter Farbflächen nahezu abstrakte Züge annimmt. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
