The young Anna Ancher was in an excellent position in more ways than one: firstly, her parents ran Brøndums Hotel in Skagen, where the artists who travelled to the village found lodgings and which later became their meeting place. Secondly, she was the only one of the artists who grew up in the North Jutland fishing village that evolved into an internationally acclaimed artists’ colony by the end of the 19th century. Women were not allowed to study at academies and universities at the time. It was also looked down upon and more than unusual for married women to work. But Anna Ancher’s parents were open to art and artists. This brought her into contact with art from a young age, and she was literally able to peer over the painters’ shoulders. Her parents allowed her to take lessons at Vilhelm Kyhn’s private drawing school for women in Copenhagen as an alternative to the academic studies denied to her. The curriculum there was strongly influenced by the established rules of academy teaching and included classical techniques in the Naturalist tradition from the Golden Age of Danish Art (Guldaldermaleri).
In this portrait, for example, Ancher works with great precision and fine brushstrokes to render the features of the mother and child in rich detail. Unlike the artist’s exuberantly colourful later works, the influence of her recently completed training is revealed in the predominant use of muted, tonal and earthy colours. Her staging of light is carefully orchestrated, consciously illuminating the faces, the woman’s hands and the child’s bright tufty hair. The bowl from which the mother is ladling porridge with a large spoon is another of the lighter areas. It also acts as a barrier to keep us at a respectful distance, while at the same time beckoning us in towards the depths of the picture. Even in this early work, Anna Ancher manages to capture a deep respect and almost affectionate familiarity with the people of Skagen, without any sense of voyeurism. KP

Auf diese Weise kam Ancher früh zur Kunst und sah den Malern buchstäblich über die Schultern. Ihre Eltern erlaubten ihr, Unterricht an Vilhelm Kyhns privater Zeichenschule für Frauen in Kopenhagen zu nehmen und so einen alternativen Weg zum versagten Akademiestudium zu gehen. Der Unterricht dort orientierte sich stark an den etablierten Regeln der Akademielehre und vermittelte klassische Techniken der naturalistischen dänischen Maltradition des Goldenen Zeitalters der dänischen Kunst (Guldaldermaleri). 
So arbeitet Ancher in diesem Porträt mit großer Genauigkeit und feinen Pinselstrichen, die detailreich die Gesichtszüge der Mutter und des Kindes wiedergeben. Im Gegensatz zu den farbsprühenden späteren Werken der Künstlerin sind es hier vor allem gedeckte, tonale und erdige Farben, die Verwendung finden und damit den Einfluss der gerade abgeschlossenen Ausbildung verdeutlichen.  Der Einsatz des Lichtes ist sehr bedacht orchestriert und erhellt gezielt die Gesichter, die Hände der Frau und den hellen Schopf des Kindes. Einen weiteren lichten Bereich kennzeichnet die Schüssel, aus der die Mutter mit einem großen Löffel Brei füttert. Sie ist gleichermaßen eine Barriere, die uns auf respektvollen Abstand hält und uns doch zugleich einen Einstieg in die Tiefe des Bildes ermöglicht. Anna Ancher vermag es auch in diesem Frühwerk, den tiefen Respekt und die beinahe liebevolle Vertrautheit mit der Skagener Bevölkerung ohne jeden Voyeurismus festzuhalten. KP

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
