Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa’s large-format painting “Women Mending Nets in the Dunes of Katwijk”, presumably painted in 1901 or slightly earlier, is set in the landscape of a meadow that features a chain of dunes and is located not far from the sea. Numerous women dressed in provincial clothing, with white bonnets and wooden shoes, have gathered to repair large fishing nets together. Whether standing, crouching or kneeling, each is focused on her work. The women seem completely naturally woven into the receding space of the landscape – indeed, a sense of monumentality develops, pointing to their activity’s significance for the good of everyone. 
This Dutch painter’s work is part of a longer iconographic tradition. The main protagonist of the Hague School, Jozef Israëls (1824–1911), was the first to take up this theme, and he then passed it on to his German colleague and friend Max Liebermann (1847–1935) in 1884. Following initial studies, Liebermann realised his monumental painting dealing with the same theme between 1887 and 1889. It was purchased by the Hamburger Kunsthalle directly after it was completed and is seen as the “programmatic picture of modern painting in Germany”.(1) It is to be assumed that Akkeringa had occupied himself with compositions by Israëls as well as Liebermann’s painting.  
Akkeringa was born in Blinjoe in the Dutch East Indies (now Belinyu, on the Indonesian island of Bangka) in 1961; his father was Dutch and his mother was Javan. In 1863, shortly after his father’s death, he arrived in The Hague, where his aunt raised him, his brother and his sister. He was already able to begin his studies at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague at the age of 17, and he probably also met Isaac Israels, Jozef Israëls’s son, there. Akkeringa transferred to the Academy of Art and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam in August 1886, and he remained there until 1887. His life later became centred around The Hague again. The theme of workers was just one facet of his oeuvre: he is also known as a painter of the carefree life – with sunny scenes from the beach and dunes animated by playing children. In dem großformatigen, vermutlich 1901 oder kurz davor geschaffenen Gemälde „Netzflickerinnen in den Dünen von Katwijk“ von Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa spielt die Handlung in einer Wiesenlandschaft, die vor einer Dünenkette unweit des Meeres liegt. Viele Frauen in dörflicher Tracht mit weißen Hauben und Holzschuhen haben sich eingefunden, um gemeinsam große Fischernetze zu reparieren. Ob stehend, hockend oder knieend, jede widmet sich konzentriert der Arbeit. In den Tiefenzug des Landschaftsraums scheinen die Personen wie selbstverständlich eingewoben zu sein – ja, es erwächst eine Monumentalität, die auf die Bedeutung ihres Tuns für das Wohl aller hinweist. 
Das Werk des niederländischen Malers steht in einer längeren ikonografischen Tradition. Das Motiv hatte zunächst der Hauptvertreter der Haager Schule, Jozef Israëls (1824–1911), aufgegriffen und seinem deutschen Kollegen und Freund Max Liebermann (1847–1935) 1884 weitervermittelt. Nach ersten Studien führte Liebermann zwischen 1887 und 1889 sein monumentales Gemälde mit derselben Thematik aus. Es wurde gleich nach Fertigstellung von der Hamburger Kunsthalle erworben und gilt als „Programmbild der modernen Malerei in Deutschland“(1). Es ist anzunehmen, dass sich Akkeringa sowohl mit Bildfindungen von Israëls als auch mit Liebermanns Bild auseinandergesetzt hat.  
Akkeringa war 1861 in Blinjoe/Niederländisch-Indien, dem heutigen Belinyu auf der indonesischen Insel Bangka, als Sohn eines niederländischen Vaters und einer javanischen Mutter geboren worden. Die Thematik der arbeitenden Bevölkerung bildet nur eine Facette seines Œuvres: Er gilt auch als Maler des sorglosen Lebens – mit sonnigen Strand- und Dünenszenen, belebt mit spielenden Kindern. Mehrere Frauen in dörflicher Tracht haben sich in einer Wiesenlandschaft unweit des Meeres eingefunden, um gemeinsam Fischernetze zu reparieren. Jede widmet sich konzentriert der Arbeit. Wie selbstverständlich scheinen die Frauen in den Tiefenzug des Landschaftsraums eingewoben zu sein – aus der Komposition erwächst eine Monumentalität, die auf die Bedeutung ihres Tuns für das Wohl aller hinweist.

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
