The approaching ships and boats are rocking alarmingly on the foaming swell, drifting relentlessly towards the harbour walls. There is also a commotion on the stone-walled jetty with a Dutch flag fluttering in the wind. Not everyone is directly involved and lends a hand in the ongoing rescue measures. Some just stand there wide-legged, hands on their hips like the figure at the centre of the jetty wearing a long garment in eye-catching yellow. The pose seems to suggest: this too shall pass. Indeed, a glistening cone of light illuminates the churning sea, heralding an imminent calm. Andreas Achenbach shifts the motif of a storm-beaten ship to the harbour itself, which became fashionable from the middle of the 19th century. The battle with nature on the high seas becomes a milieu portrayal with a large cast and plenty of action, a spectacle that may have reflected the nostalgic views of Wilhelminian era city dwellers unaccustomed to the power of the elements.
Born 1815 in Kassel, the artist is considered one of the most prominent representatives of the Düsseldorf school of painting and was even called “master of the land and the sea”. He drew inspiration from numerous study trips, during which he visited the Netherlands on several occasions, in addition to Norway, Sweden, England and Italy. Already a highly accomplished landscape painter during his lifetime, Achenbach specialised in depicting ships and seascapes in raging storms, for which he occasionally faced accusations of pathos. The artist’s brother was the equally famous Oswald Achenbach, who focused on depicting the landscape of Italy. At times, the two brothers are jokingly referred to as the “A and O of landscape painting”. Achenbach died in 1910 at the age of 94 – the recipient of numerous honorary fellowships, orders and medals and held in high esteem by the general public. PL

Diese Pose scheint zu sagen: Das geht schon vorüber und fürwahr: Das aufgewühlte Meer wird durch einen gleißenden Lichtkegel beleuchtet – Windstille steht bevor. Andreas Achenbach verlegt das Motiv des sturmgepeitschten Schiffes in die Sphäre des Hafens, wie es ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts Mode wurde. Der Kampf mit der Natur auf hoher See wird zu einer figuren- und handlungsreichen Milieuschilderung, zu einem Schauvergnügen, das dem nostalgischen Blick des naturentwöhnten Städters der Gründerzeit entsprochen haben mag.

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
