Surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere, a woman wearing the traditional dress of the Fanø islanders sits in the shade of a tree. She is absorbed in her handiwork and her gaze is absent-minded, as though she were paying no attention to the almost mechanically executed work of her hands. A large woven basket stands before her feet. The scene is composed in a summery, colourful palette and features warm contrasts of light and dark. The motif is centred around the brightly lit, yellow and gold door of a brick building. The first letter on the rusty-red sign above it, a capital “K”, is clearly legible. The picture’s title and historical photos make it possible to identify the pub as “Sønderho Kro”, a village tavern that can still be found today in Sønderho, at the southern tip of Fanø.
The painting was created by August Wilckens, whom the German-Danish painter Charlotte von Krogh (1827–1913) had encouraged to seek training as a painter. He subsequently attended the applied arts schools in Munich and Nuremberg and worked as a draughtsman at a lithographic workshop in Dresden. Then he decided to study at the academy of arts in Dresden. Wilckens journeyed to France and Italy to build on his formal studies before returning back to Dresden, a city with which he would always maintain a bond.
For Wilckens the island of Fanø was his summer home, an object of longing and a never-ending source of inspiration. The painter Hans Peter Feddersen (1848–1941), whose impressionist works are also represented in the Kunst der Westküste Collection, recommended the island to his younger colleague. In 1899 Wilckens’s paintings depicting the idyllic beauty of Fanø were exhibited at the Kunsthalle zu Kiel, where they were highly popular among the public and art critics.(1) However, the artist largely supported himself through his work as a restorer and church painter. An increased interest in Nordic mythology can be identified in Wilckens’s later works, although there is no detailed research of his oeuvre, particularly with regard to the 1920s. One reason for this may be that large portions of his artistic estate seem to have been lost during the bombing of Dresden. SNS

In friedlicher Atmosphäre sitzt eine Frau in der Tracht der Fannikerinnen im Schatten eines Baumes. Sie ist in ihre Handarbeit versunken und ihr Blick ist gedankenverloren, als achte sie nicht darauf, welche Arbeit ihre Hände fast mechanisch vollbringen. Vor ihren Füßen steht ein großer geflochtener Korb. Die Szene ist in einer sommerlichen, bunten Farbpalette und mit warmen Hell-Dunkelkontrasten gestaltet. Im Zentrum des Motives steht die hell erleuchtete, gelbgoldene Tür eines Backsteinhauses, über der ein rostrotes Schild hängt. Deutlich ist der erste Buchstabe, ein großes „K“, auszumachen. Der Bildtitel und historische Fotos ermöglichen die Identifizierung der Gastschänke als „Sønderho Kro“, ein Dorfkrug, welcher sich bis heute im südlichen Sønderho auf der Insel Fanø befindet.

Seine künstlerische Laufbahn führte ihn nach Dresden, wo er als Zeichner in der Lithographischen Anstalt arbeitete und später ein Studium an der Kunstakademie absolvierte. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
