Laurits Tuxen was inspired by a bonfire marking the summer solstice to produce his large-scale painting, which combines the bright colours of the flames with the cool tones of the gathering dusk. A fairly muted expanse of the sea around Skagen shapes the background in this portrait format, half of which is taken up by the sky.
