In “A Norwegian Fjord in Summer”, Georg Anton Rasmussen presents a majestic mountain panorama on the coast of Norway. The artist placed a group of figures in the foreground of the painting, accentuating the overwhelming dimensions of the fjord landscape and, as it were, enlivening the natural space. The small family is using the still and beautiful day for a spot of fishing. Seemingly immersed in her handicrafts, a woman in a headscarf, sitting on a rocky outcrop that juts out into the water, has her back turned to the viewer. The boy standing next to her and the man just offshore in a small rowing boat have both cast their fishing lines into the water. While the man’s seated posture exudes the patience of an experienced fisherman, the boy is watching his bait intently. Surrounded by rugged, forested slopes and huge, snow-covered mountains, these people appear at one with nature. Nothing in this idealised rural paradise points to the onerous aspects of this lifestyle. Instead, a closer look reveals a steamship far off in the distance. This detail presages social transformation and industrialisation, and with them changes in the lives and work of this Norwegian family.
Rasmussen studied at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie between 1864 and 1867. Influences of the Düsseldorf School are noticeable in his painting “A Norwegian Fjord in Summer”. The nostalgic motif of Norwegian country folk out fishing is particularly reminiscent of the romantic nationalist imagery of his older Norwegian artist colleague Hans Fredrik Gude (1825–1903), who is also represented in the collection of the Museum Kunst der Westküste with paintings such as “Salmon Fisher on a Norwegian Fjord”. Im Vordergrund des Bildes platzierte der Maler eine Figurengruppe, die die übermächtigen Dimensionen der dargestellten Fjordlandschaft unterstreicht und den Naturraum gleichsam belebt. Die kleine Familie nutzt den schönen windstillen Tag um zu fischen. Scheinbar in eine Handarbeit vertieft, hat die Frau mit Kopftuch, die auf einem ins Wasser ragenden Felsvorsprung sitzt, dem Betrachter den Rücken zugewandt. Sowohl der neben ihr stehende Knabe als auch der Mann in dem unweit entfernten kleinen Ruderboot haben ihre Angelruten ausgeworfen. Während die Sitzhaltung des Mannes die Geduld eines erfahrenen Fischers ausstrahlt, beobachtet der Junge gespannt seinen Köder. Umgeben von rauen, bewaldeten Abhängen und mächtigen, schneebedeckten Bergen scheinen diese Menschen im Einklang mit der Natur zu leben. Nichts in der idealisierten ländlichen Idylle verweist auf die beschwerlichen Aspekte einer derartigen Existenz. Stattdessen kann man bei genauer Betrachtung in weiter Ferne ein Dampfschiff ausmachen. Dieses Detail kündigt gesellschaftlichen Wandel und Industrialisierung an und somit eine Veränderung der Lebens- und Arbeitswelt der norwegischen Familie.

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
