The young woman lies supine in bed, one leg slightly bent, her right arm dangling limply. Are her eyes closed, or is she gazing tiredly out at the viewer? Whatever else is true, she will have to sober up first. The picture is boldly cropped, and only part of the table is visible in front of the bed. But what we do see, speaks for itself: bottles and glasses – the remnants of nocturnal carousing. The viewer assumes the role of an intruder, an uninvited voyeur who gets uncomfortably close to the woman.
Munch became known to a wider audience in Germany in 1892. Encouraged by the painter Adelsteen Normann, the conservative Association of Berlin Artists invited him to a solo exhibition – unaware of Munch’s oeuvre! Received with outrage, the show was shut down after just one week, but the “Munch Affair” gave the artist his international breakthrough. Previously involved in the Kristiania bohemians around the anarchist poet Hans Jæger, Munch now became a fêted guest of the intelligentsia frequenting the Berlin wine bar Zum schwarzen Ferkel.
In his drypoint etching entitled “The Day After”, the artist almost completely abandons the conventions of earlier interior depictions: he introduces the viewer to an anti-bourgeois area of life and immortalises a subject his contemporaries will inevitably have found scandalous. Instead, the motif of total exhaustion after excessive boozing fulfilled the criteria of Munch’s St. Cloud Manifesto, which he formulated in 1889: “No longer shall I paint interiors with men reading and women knitting. I will paint living people who breathe and feel and suffer and love.”(1) WT

Auf dem Rücken liegt die junge Frau im Bett, ein Bein leicht abgewinkelt, ihr rechter Arm hängt schlaff herunter. Sind ihre Augen noch geschlossen oder blickt sie dem Betrachter müde entgegen? Jedenfalls muss sie ihren Rausch auskurieren. Der Bildausschnitt ist kühn gewählt, nur ein Teil des Tisches ist vor dem Bett zu sehen. Was darauf zu erkennen ist, spricht jedoch für sich: Flaschen und Gläser – die Überbleibsel eines nächtlichen Gelages. Der Betrachter gerät in die Rolle eines Eindringlings, eines ungebetenen Voyeurs, welcher der Frau empfindlich nahe kommt.

In seiner Kaltnadelradierung mit dem Titel „Der Tag danach“ entfernt sich der Künstler weit von den Konventionen früherer Interieur-Darstellungen: Er führt den Betrachter in eine antibürgerliche Lebenssphäre ein und verleiht einem Thema Bildwürde, das seine Zeitgenossen schockiert haben dürfte. Dafür erfüllte das Motiv der totalen Erschöpfung nach exzessivem Gelage die Kriterien von Munchs 1889 formuliertem „Manifest von St. Cloud“: „Keine Interieurs sollten mehr gemalt werden, keine Menschen, die lesen, keine Frauen, die stricken. Es müßten lebendige Menschen sein, die atmen und fühlen, leiden und lieben.“(1) WT

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
