Already an established artist and a respected teacher at Copenhagen’s Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, Peder Severin Krøyer drew inspiration primarily from French painting and therefore endorsed the advent of Modernism in Denmark. Inspired by the artist couple Anna and Michael Ancher and their fascination with Skagen, Krøyer’s first trip to the tip of North Jutland in 1882 was intended to be recuperative. But the village, its setting in untouched nature and the authentic lifestyle of its residents...
