Edvard Munch (1863–1944), today one of the most famous Norwegian artists, was able to cast off the stylistic shackles of his age, eschewing the constraints of Realism, Naturalism, Impressionism and Symbolism. He developed his own visionary visual language, which enabled him to combine the form and content of his compositions and their often strong psychological connotations.
Aged 24 or 25 at the time, the artist produced “Summer Day on the Pier” in portrait format either in 1887 or 1888. The painting’s viewer is located on the shore of a Norwegian fjord. Four years his younger, Munch’s sister Laura Cathrine (1867–1926), her head lowered, stands on a jetty that juts out diagonally into the centre of the picture from the lower right corner. Her sister Inger Marie (1868–1952) is seated in a rowing boat some distance from the shore. The young women are wearing blue dresses and yellow hats, which they had purchased in Tirol in 1887. Munch’s family visited Veierland fjord near the town of Tønsberg in the summer of the same year. The scene portrayed here may be a snapshot from a fresh summer’s day.
Dominated by blueish-grey and pink, the colouring and the experimental brushwork are indicative of the Impressionist influences that Munch had encountered in 1885 during a three-week trip to Paris. Moreover, the painting is steeped in a psychological tension that is typical of Munch’s work but less so of Impressionism.
Laura, her facial features left largely unpainted and merely indicated by a smattering of brushstrokes, takes no notice of her sister. She is shown instead standing on the jetty, gazing straight down at the water. For her part, Inger Marie is looking over at the town on the opposite shore of the fjord. Nobody is paying any attention to the observer of the scene. The two young ladies and the observer in the painting are left entirely secluded in their own emotional worlds. Throughout his life, Munch remained fascinated by the motifs of melancholy and social isolation. Both the artist and his sister Laura experienced recurring phases of depression, which may be attributable to the premature deaths of their mother and sister Johanne Sophie (1862–1877) as well as their father’s delusions. It is still impossible to say whether these circumstances are the reason why “Sommertag auf dem Anleger” remains bereft of social interaction. UWT/SD

Er fand zu einer eigenständigen zukunftsweisenden Bildsprache, die es ihm ermöglichte, Form und Inhalt seiner psychologisch oft stark konnotierten Kompositionen zu verbinden. 
Das hochformartige Gemälde „Sommertag auf dem Anleger“ schuf der damals 24/25-jährige Künstler entweder 1887 oder 1888. Der Betrachter des Bildes befindet sich am Ufer eines norwegischen Fjordes. Munchs vier Jahre jüngere Schwester Laura Cathrine (1867–1926) steht mit gesenktem Haupt auf einem Bootanleger, der aus dem rechten unteren Bildbereich diagonal in die Bildmitte ragt. In einiger Entfernung zum Ufer, in einem kleinen Ruderboot, sitzt ihre Schwester Inger Marie (1868–1952). Die jungen Frauen tragen blaue Kleider und gelbe Hüte. Letztere erwarben sie 1887 in Tirol. Im Sommer desselben Jahres besuchte Munchs Familie den Fjord Veierland in Nähe der Stadt Tønsberg. Möglicherweise zeigt die dargestellte Szene eine Momentaufnahme aus dieser Sommerfrische. 
Im Kolorit mit seiner blau-grau und rosa dominierten Farbpalette und im experimentellen Duktus deuten sich impressionistische Tendenzen an, mit denen Munch 1885 während seines dreiwöchigen Parisaufenthalts in Berührung kam. Zudem zeichnet sich das Gemälde durch eine für Munchs Arbeiten charakteristische, psychologische Spannung aus, die für den Impressionismus untypisch ist. 
Laura, deren Gesichtszüge malerisch nicht ausgeführt, sondern lediglich durch wenige Pinselstriche angedeutet sind, nimmt keine Notiz von ihrer Schwester. Stattdessen schaut sie von dem Bootanleger aus nach unten in das Wasser. Inger Marie blickt ihrerseits auf die Stadt, die sich am gegenüberliegenden Ufer des Fjordes befindet. Niemand nimmt den Beobachter der dargestellten Szene war. Die beiden jungen Damen, ebenso wie der Betrachter des Bildes, sind auf die eigenen Gefühlswelten zurückgeworfen. Melancholie und soziale Isolation als Bildthemen beschäftigten Munch zeitlebens. Sowohl der Künstler als auch seine Schwester Laura durchlebten immer wieder depressive Phasen, was mit dem frühen Tod der Mutter und der Schwester Johanne Sophie (1862–1877) sowie mit den Wahnvorstellungen des Vaters in Zusammenhang stehen könnte. Ob dies der Hintergrund für das Fehlen jeglicher sozialer Interaktion in „Sommertag auf dem Anleger“ ist, muss offen bleiben. UWT/SD

In the painting “Summer Day on the Pier”, Munch's sister Laura Cathrine (1867-1926), four years younger than him, is standing on a jetty, with her sister Inger Marie (1868-1952) sitting in a small rowing boat.

The colouring and experimental style hint at Impressionist tendencies, which Munch came into contact with during his three-week stay in Paris in 1885. The painting is also characterised by a psychological tension that is typical of Munch's work and atypical of Impressionism. Laura takes no notice of her sister. Instead, she looks down into the water from the jetty. Inger Marie, for her part, looks at the town on the opposite shore.

Melancholy and social isolation as pictorial themes preoccupied Munch throughout his life. Both the artist and his sister Laura repeatedly experienced phases of depression, which could be linked to the early deaths of their mother and sister Johanne Sophie (1862-1877) as well as their father's delusions. Whether this is the reason for the lack of any social interaction in “Summer Day on the Pier” must remain an open question.

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
