Edvard Munch (1863–1944), today one of the most famous Norwegian artists, was able to cast off the stylistic shackles of his age, eschewing the constraints of Realism, Naturalism, Impressionism and Symbolism. He developed his own visionary visual language, which enabled him to combine the form and content of his compositions and their often strong psychological connotations.
