A man, probably the beach warden of Skagen, stands on the shore and gazes out to sea, lost in thought. His dark silhouette stands out powerfully against the scenery, which is suffused with blue light. The gloaming has arrived, softening all contrasts between the colours. The artist draws the blue, red and light brown tones closer together to suggest the notion of almost infinite space. Even the beach seems bathed in blue light.
