Painted in the early 1920s, the work entitled “Tidal Flats near Wyck” shows the wide view from Wyk beach across the mudflats, which are only partially covered by water. To depict the seabed, the artist selected a colour scheme of finely nuanced blues, greys and browns, which he spread into narrow bands, widening occasionally into broader pools of water, in the lower part of the painting. Similar colours are reserved for portraying the sky, with the horizontal, more clearly contoured structures of the ground transitioning directly into the brightening blue of the sky’s canopy. The terps of the Langeneß and Oland islets are dimly visible in the distance, with the firmament above shimmering in a delicate yellow light. White cirrus clouds herald a change in the weather. The scene is devoid of human life. In this atmospheric depiction, the artist manages to convey a quiet, almost contemplative moment.
Max Clarenbach became known, among other things, for his paintings of river landscapes from the Lower Rhine. He also undertook regular study trips to the coasts of East and North Frisia, including Föhr, where he spent several holidays. During his studies at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie leading up to 1900, Clarenbach initially espoused the realistic style of landscape painting advocated by the Barbizon School and the Hague School. A charter member of the Sonderbund league of artists and art enthusiasts, he campaigned for the presentation of French Impressionists in Düsseldorf and Cologne between 1909 and 1915. This opened the door to the first comprehensive overview of this pan-European art movement. Over time, Clarenbach gradually adopted a moderately academic style of painting rather than a modern one. Das Anfang der 1920er-Jahre entstandene Gemälde „Wattenmeer bei Wyck“ zeigt den weiten Ausblick vom Wyker Strand über das Watt, das nur noch teilweise von Wasser bedeckt ist. Für die Darstellung des Meeresbodens wählte der Künstler ein Farbschema aus fein nuancierten Blau-, Grau- und Brauntönen, die er in schmalen Bahnen, die sich mitunter zu breiteren Wasserlachen erweitern, im unteren Bildbereich verteilt hat. Ähnliche Farben sind der Gestaltung des Himmels vorbehalten, wobei die horizontalen, klarer konturierten Strukturen des Bodens ganz unmittelbar in das aufhellende Blau des hohen Himmels übergeben. In der Ferne sind schemenhaft die Warften der Halligen Langeneß und Oland zu erkennen, über denen das Firmament in zartgelbem Licht schimmert. Weiße Zirruswolken künden eine Wetterveränderung an. Die Szenerie ist menschenleer. Mit seiner atmosphärischen Darstellung gelingt es dem Künstler, einen stillen, geradezu kontemplativ anmutenden Moment zu vermitteln.

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
