The older children, two girls wearing large headscarves tied under the chin, are clutching a cod, its mouth gaping wipe. It is a sizeable catch they are presenting. Their father may just have brought it home from the sea.
Anna Ancher demonstrates her remarkable observational skills with this seemingly unselfconscious everyday scene: The children’s facial expressions – all of whom have oddly adult features – alternate between excitement, pride and tension, and the subtle play of light sets the scene atmospherically. Like the two boys, the girl on the left in the dark dress stands in the half-shadow, while the girl on the right in the light-coloured apron is already stepping into the parlour, where she is captured in the soft light.
Anna Ancher was held in high esteem in the Skagen artists’ colony that emerged in the small fishing village on the northern tip of Jutland from the mid-1870s onwards. The only member of the artistic group born in Skagen, the then 15-year-old met the painter Michael Ancher (1849–1927) when he travelled to Skagen in 1874; they married in 1880. Inspired by her artistic environment, she attended a private drawing school for women in Copenhagen, as women were still barred from the art academy at the time. Aside from her own family – her mother Ane Brøndum and her daughter Helga feature often in her paintings – Anna Ancher found her models among the local fishing families. She frequently depicted women and children in a domestic context. Echoes of Dutch interior painting from the 17th century are perceptible in these pieces. Later on, Ancher’s style of painting became strongly influenced by French Impressionism, which she encountered in Copenhagen and elsewhere, as well as during her sojourns in Paris.  PL

Das Mädchen links im dunklen Kleid steht wie die beiden Buben im Halbschatten, während auf der rechten Seite das Mädchen in der hellen Schürze schon einen Schritt in die Stube setzt und von sanftem Licht erfasst wird.

Angeregt durch ihr künstlerisches Umfeld besuchte sie eine private Zeichenschule für Frauen in Kopenhagen; das Studium an der Kunstakademie wurde Frauen damals noch verwehrt. Neben ihrer eigenen Familie – vor allem ihre Mutter Ane Brøndum sowie die Tochter Helga tauchen häufig in ihren Bildern auf – fand Anna Ancher ihre Modelle unter den ortsansässigen Fischerfamilien. Vielfach konzentrierte sie sich auf die Darstellung von Frauen und Kindern im häuslichen Kontext, wobei Anklänge an die niederländische Interieurmalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts erkennbar sind. Später wurde Anchers Malweise stark durch den französischen Impressionismus geprägt, mit dem sie unter anderem in Kopenhagen sowie durch ihre Reisen nach Paris in Berührung kam. PL

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
