In addition to large-format figure compositions, the Skagen artist Michael Ancher also produced numerous small-format, atmospheric paintings around 1900, which focus on peculiarities in Skagen’s characteristic landscape. Like many Scandinavian painters, Ancher travelled to Skagen in northern Jutland during the second half of the 19th century in search of unspoilt nature, which he found in the quaint fishing village far removed from the emerging industrialisation and urbanisation of Denmark. His deeply atmospheric studies produced in plein air, so outdoors according to the French trend, testify to the artist’s intense appraisal of, and deep bond with, the extraordinary place where he was living. The colours in Ancher’s “Sunset on Skagen” still adhere to the style of his earlier works, in which he concentrated on an earthy-warm tonality inspired by the Barbizon School. The small study reveals the mood in the moment of sunset, with the Skagen silhouette perched on the low-set horizon, glowing in a peculiar light despite the pared-down range of colours. A solitary ribbon of dark cloud stretches across the expanse of the otherwise clear sky, painted in gentle shades of yellow and blue. The noticeably impasto application of paint in the centre of the piece draws the viewer’s attention to the setting sun, concealed behind the band of clouds. In the foreground, a section of flat landscape already appears to be sinking into the almost mystical gloaming. MN

Neben den großformatigen Figurenkompositionen des Skagenmalers Michael Ancher entstehen um 1900 ebenfalls zahlreiche kleinformatige Stimmungsbilder, welche den Besonderheiten der charakteristischen Landschaft Skagens gewidmet sind. Wie viele skandinavische Maler sucht auch Ancher in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts im nordjütländischen Skagen nach einer ursprünglichen Natur, die er fernab der aufkommenden Industrialisierung und Urbanisierung Dänemarks in dem kleinen Fischerdorf entdeckt. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
