Moonlit Beach, 1843/44

The Norwegian painter Peder Balke devoted himself to sublime landscape motifs of the North: views of fjords, mountain ranges, the open sea or the North Cape. Like his compatriot Johan Christian Dahl before him, whom he first met in Dresden in 1835, he was inspired by the untouched and rugged nature of Norway on journeys that took him as far as the North Cape.
