The Danish artist Niels Bjerre depicts an imposing cliff in his painting entitled “View on the Beach at Bovbjerg”: almost dominating the image, the cliffs thrust themselves into view, with the highest outcrop located around the centre of the picture. The work resembles two works by the German painter Carl Hilmers that are also part of the MKdW collection: “The Red Cliff near Kampen” and “Helgoland” (1921). Both artists bring the rock masses very close to the viewer, although significant differences also become visible: while Hilmers depicts the cliffs in jagged, almost aggressive shapes and colours, Bjerres rocks seem almost amorphous, soft and utterly non-threatening with their light, powdery shades of yellow, green and brown.
Niels Bjerre came from Engbjerg near Lemvig, a municipality on the west coast of Denmark that included the village of Bovbjerg. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen during the 1880s. Always somewhat blurred, the calm compositions of his pictures are reminiscent of the works of Vilhelm Hammershøi, a contemporary painter who worked in Copenhagen and may have been influential. Bjerre’s paintings, mainly landscapes, were largely produced in Jutland or in his native West Jutland, a region with which he retained strong bonds throughout his life. But the artist also travelled abroad on a number of occasions: he was in Italy from 1899 to 1901, travelled to France in 1914 and visited the Faroe Islands in 1925 and 1926. PL

In seinem Gemälde „Aussicht auf den Strand bei Bovbjerg“ setzt der dänische Künstler Niels Bjerre eine imposante Steilküste in Szene: Nahezu bildbeherrschend schiebt sich diese ins Sichtfeld, wobei der am höchsten gelegene Felsen ungefähr in der Bildmitte liegt. Das Werk ähnelt zwei ebenfalls in der Sammlung des MKdW befindlichen Gemälden des deutschen Malers Carl Hilmers: „Das Rote Kliff bei Kampen" und „Helgoland“ (1921). Beide Künstler rücken die Felsmassen ganz nahe an den Betrachter, doch werden zugleich signifikante Unterschiede sichtbar: Während Hilmers die Steilküsten in zerklüfteten, geradezu aggressiven Formen und Farben darstellt, wirken die in hellen, pudrigen Gelb-, Grün- und Brauntönen gehaltenen Felsen bei Bjerre fast amorph, weich und keinesfalls bedrohlich.

Seine ruhigen Bildkompositionen, die stets in leichter Unschärfe erscheinen, erinnern an die Werke des ebenfalls in Kopenhagen tätigen, gleichaltrigen Malers Vilhelm Hammershøi, der ihn beeinflusst haben dürfte. Bjerres Bilder, bei denen es sich hauptsächlich um Landschaften handelt, entstanden zumeist in Jütland bzw. in seiner Heimat Westjütland, der er Zeit seines Lebens verbunden blieb. Gleichwohl unternahm der Künstler auch einige Auslandsreisen: 1899 bis 1901 war er in Italien, 1914 reiste er nach Frankreich sowie 1925 und 1926 auf die Inselgruppe der Färöer. PL

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
