Icy fun! The ice skaters glide across the slick surface, setting course with their arms crossed confidently behind their backs and their coats flapping. It isn’t easy to keep your balance –the poor fellow lying on his back in the middle of the picture, arms and legs splayed out, reminds us of that. The only ones with solid ground under their feet are the two people on the snow-covered path which recedes into the distance on the left and has a windmill rising up out of it. The background reveals the buildings of the little town of Maassluis, located not far from Rotterdam, with the Groote Kerk rising above the rest. Above it all, we find a cloudy sky on display.
The theme of ice skaters goes back to the Dutch art of the 16th and 17th centuries and had already been depicted by artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569), Hendrik Avercamp (1585–1634) and Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). The motif achieved particular popularity in the 19th century through the pictures of Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870). Compared with the meticulously painted images of Schelfhout, who shaped the genre that bore his name – the winter landscapes populated by common folk that were known as “Schelfhoutjes” – the art of his student Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891) stands for a new age. His painting is characterised by a hazy and cold atmosphere as well as the nimble motions of the ice skaters, and his brushwork is more rapid, spontaneous and sketch-like. 
But Jongkind had already been occupying himself with the motif for quite some time when he created this painting, and he also produced variations in different techniques. Insight into this aspect is provided by an etching in which the figures are positioned somewhat differently and the sails of the windmill point in the opposite direction.(1) It is one of six motifs from his “Cahier de six eaux-fortes”, an 1862 portfolio based on sketches the artist created while travelling in Belgium and the Netherlands.(2) Technically demanding, the medium of etching was rediscovered as a means of individual artistic expression in the mid-19th century – thus, with this portfolio work, we find the artist directly in step with the latest developments of his time.
By the time Jongkind produced this scene featuring ice skaters outside Maassluis, his life had long since become centred around France, where a bursary from King Willem I had brought him in the 1840s. While he depicted the shores of the Seine or the streets of Paris there, the artist returned from his old homeland with lively views of the harbours of Haarlem, Antwerp and Rotterdam as well as impressions from Maassluis, where he had lived with his parents. His atmospherically dense, vibrant pictures impressed his contemporaries, such as the young writer Émile Zola (1840–1902) or also Claude Monet (1840–1926), and made Jongkind an important forerunner of impressionism. Ein Eisvergnügen! Mit flatternden Mänteln gleiten die Schlittschuhläufer über die glatte Fläche. Die Arme souverän hinter dem Rücken gekreuzt, ziehen sie ihre Bahnen. Leicht ist es nicht, die Balance zu halten – daran erinnert uns der arme Kerl, der in der Bildmitte rücklings auf dem Eis liegt, die Arme und Beine weit von sich gestreckt. Festen Boden unter den Füßen haben nur die beiden Personen auf dem verschneiten Pfad, der links im Bild in die Tiefe fluchtet und von dem aus die Windmühle aufragt. Im Hintergrund tun sich die Gebäude des nahe Rotterdam gelegenen Städtchens Maassluis auf, überragt von der Groote Kerk. Über allem prangt ein bewölkter Himmel.
Das Eisläuferthema geht in die niederländische Kunst des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts zurück und wurde bereits von Künstlern wie Pieter Bruegel d. Ä. (um 1525–1569), Hendrik Avercamp (1585–1634) oder Rembrandt von Rijn (1606–1669) bearbeitet. Durch die Bilder von Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870) erreichte das Motiv im 19. Jahrhundert eine besondere Popularität. Verglichen mit den feinmalerischen Darstellungen von Schelfhout, welcher das Genre der nach ihm benannten „Schelfhoutjes“, der volkstümlich belebten Winterlandschaften, prägte, steht die Kunst seines Schülers Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891) für eine neue Zeit. Sein Gemälde wird durch die diesig-kalte Atmosphäre sowie die flinken Bewegungen der Eisläufer charakterisiert – schneller, spontaner und skizzenhafter ist seine Pinselführung. 
Zum Entstehungszeitpunkt des Gemäldes beschäftigte Jongkind das Motiv jedoch schon länger, und er variierte es auch in unterschiedlichen Techniken. Darüber gibt eine Radierung Aufschluss, in der die Figuren etwas anders platziert werden und die Flügel der Windmühle in die entgegengesetzte Richtung zeigen.(1) Es handelt sich um eines von sechs Motiven aus dem „Cahier de six eaux-fortes“, einer im Jahr 1862 erschienenen Mappe, in welcher der Künstler Reiseskizzen aus Belgien und den Niederlanden verarbeitet hat.(2) Die technisch anspruchsvolle Radierung wurde Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als Medium des individuellen künstlerischen Ausdrucks neu entdeckt – mit seinem Mappenwerk bewegte sich der Künstler demnach ganz am Puls der Zeit.
Als Jongkind seine Schlittschuhläufer vor Maassluis ins Bild setzte, lag sein Lebensmittelpunkt längst in Frankreich, wohin ihn Mitte der 1840er-Jahre ein Stipendium von König Willem I. geführt hatte. Während er dort die Ufer der Seine oder die Straßen von Paris darstellte, kehrte der Künstler aus seiner alten Heimat mit stimmungsvollen Hafenansichten aus Haarlem, Antwerpen und Rotterdam oder Impressionen von Maassluis zurück, wo er selbst mit seinen Eltern gelebt hatte. Seine atmosphärisch dichten, lebendigen Bilder beindruckten schon Zeitgenossen wie den jungen Schriftsteller Émile Zola (1840–1902) oder auch Claude Monet (1840–1926) und ließen Jongkind zu einem wichtigen Vorbereiter des Impressionismus werden. A pleasure on ice! With fluttering coats, the skaters glide over the smooth surface. The buildings of the small town of Maassluis near Rotterdam loom in the background, dominated by the Groote Kerk. A cloudy sky looms over everything. The ice-skating theme goes back to Dutch art of the 16th and 17th centuries and achieved particular popularity in the 19th century through the paintings of Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). Compared to Schelfhout's finely painted depictions, which characterised the genre of the ‘Schelfhoutjes’ named after him, the popularly animated winter landscapes, the art of his pupil Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) represents a new era. His painting is characterised by the hazy, cold atmosphere and the swift movements of the ice skaters.

Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
