Since around 1906, Otto Heinrich Engel increasingly turned his attention to the interiors of houses on the island of Föhr. The white parlour that gives this painting its title owes its name to its walls, which are covered in Delft tiles brought back by sailors from Föhr from their voyages. In addition to their decorative aspects, these tiles also had a practical function: they kept moisture from outside at bay.

Specifically, this “white parlour” is the Pesel of a house in Alkersum, whose owner at the time, Wilhelm Hinrich Jensen (1888–1972), came from a long-established family of Föhr seafarers. His maternal ancestors included the whaling commander Oluf Nahmen Pauls (1815–1852) from Borgsum, who is depicted with his wife Metta, née Paulsen (1815–1898), in the portraits on the tiled wall on the right.

Seit etwa 1906 wandte sich Otto Heinrich Engel vermehrt den Interieurs der Föhrer Häuser zu. Die hier titelgebende weiße Stube trägt ihren Namen durch die durchgängig gefliesten Wände, mit Delfter Kacheln, die die Föhrer Seefahrer von ihren Fahrten mitbrachten. Neben dekorativen Aspekten hatten diese auch eine praktische Funktion: Sie hielten die Feuchtigkeit von außen fern.

Konkret handelt es sich bei der „Weißen Stube" um den Pesel eines Alkersumer Hauses, dessen damaliger Besitzer Wilhelm Hinrich Jensen (1888–1972) einem eingesessenen Föhringer Seefahrergeschlecht entstammte. Zu den Vorfahren mütterlicherseits zählte der Walfangkommandeur Oluf Nahmen Pauls (1815–1852) aus Borgsum, der mit seiner Ehefrau Metta, geb. Paulsen (1815–1898) auf den Porträts an der Fliesenwand rechts dargestellt ist.

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
