Helga Ancher

Interior with Praying Old Woman, n. d.

An old woman sitting on a low wooden chest in a sparse, reddish-brown parlour is shown in side view: her hands clasped, her demeanour tense and anxious, she is completely absorbed in her dialogue with God. A curtain covers the rear window almost to the top. The bright daylight enters only through a narrow slit, casting highlights on the woman’s back, the lid of the chest and on her knees. The room is otherwise shrouded in twilight. Helga Ancher was the only child of Anna (née Brøndum, 1859–1935)...
