An old woman sitting on a low wooden chest in a sparse, reddish-brown parlour is shown in side view: her hands clasped, her demeanour tense and anxious, she is completely absorbed in her dialogue with God. A curtain covers the rear window almost to the top. The bright daylight enters only through a narrow slit, casting highlights on the woman’s back, the lid of the chest and on her knees. The room is otherwise shrouded in twilight.
