Helga Ancher was the only child of Anna (née Brøndum, 1859–1935) and Michael Ancher (1849–1927). Members of the Skagen artists’ colony, their works also feature in the MKdW collection. Influenced by her artistic environment, the young woman enrolled at the Kunstakademiets Kunstskole for Kvinder (Art Academy for Women) in Copenhagen in 1901. She also studied in Paris under Lucien Simon (1861–1945) from 1909 to 1910. Helga Ancher only left behind a small body of work. But she often sat for the artists around her as a child and young woman, especially for her mother Anna Ancher, who depicted her daughter in various activities like sewing, reading or praying.
She guarded her parent’s legacy in the Anchers Hus throughout her life. The Helga Ancher Foundation was established after her death in 1964, and her childhood home reopened as a museum in its original condition just three years later. The Anchers Hus, the Drachmann Hus – named after the famous Danish painter and poet who was also associated with the Skagen circle of artists – and the Skagens Museum have together formed the Skagens Kunstmuseer (Art Museums of Skagen) since 2014. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
