The composition of this painting includes many of the rich motifs that Hans Peter Feddersen noted down in his sketchbook (private collection) during what was likely his first study trip to Fanø in June 1892. With its approximately 29 single or double-page drawings in 13 x 21 cm format, the book testifies to the artist’s outstanding powers of observation and ability to make quick sketches of the things he saw.
The painting depicts the brightly plastered houses of the small harbour village of Nordby which peak out from behind the dune crest that slopes leftwards towards the beach. Residents of this village are nicknamed fanniker. The five little girls are bursts of colour in the landscape, with the pale dune sand enclosed by the lush green grass of the beach. Accompanying their blue-striped jackets, they wear red scarves and bonnets, red skirts with green hemlines and light blue or pink aprons. Their interaction is also vividly portrayed: three children on a plank bench are in animated conversation, while a fourth one stands a little apart and draws the viewer’s attention to a girl sitting in the grass, knitting. The light of the high sun – not shown in the painting itself – is so powerful that the girls’ dark shadows create an intriguing chiaroscuro contrast on the light ground.
Nuanced brushstroke techniques are found on the surface of the painting: delicately painted sections such as the sky and the light blue of the sea mingle with areas that reveal a rough application. They include bright yellow petals and blades of grass that are noticeably bumpy. The figures appear embedded in the landscape and are not arranged in any staffage. Lightness is expressed with the colours alone and does not require a dark object to create a sense of brightness – a still widespread method at the time, but one which Feddersen no longer used. WT

In der Landschaft, in welcher der helle Dünensand saftig grünes Strandgras umschließt, stellen die fünf kleinen Mädchen bunte Farbakzente dar: Zu ihren blaugestreiften Jacken tragen sie rote Halstücher und Hauben sowie rote Röcke mit grünem Saumstreifen und hellblauen oder rosafarbenen Schürzen. Auch ihr Miteinander selbst wird lebhaft geschildert: Drei Kinder, auf einer Bohlenbank sitzend, plaudern angeregt, ein viertes steht unweit entfernt und lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit des Betrachters auf ein im Gras hockendes Mädchen, das strickt. Die hochstehende Sonne – im Bild selbst ist sie nicht zu sehen – entsendet ein derart kräftiges Licht, dass dunkle Schattensilhouetten einen spannungsvollen Helldunkelkontrast auf dem lichten Boden erzeugen. 
Die Maloberfläche offenbart eine differenzierte Pinseltechnik: Neben feinmalerischen Partien wie im Bereich des Himmels und des lichten Blau des Meeres gibt es ebenso raue Darstellungsbereiche. Dazu gehören etwa die leuchtend gelben Blüten und die Grashalme, die haptisch hervortreten. Die Bildfiguren sind integraler Bestandteil der Landschaft und haben jegliche staffagehafte Anmutung verloren. Das Licht ist allein aus der Farbe herausgearbeitet und bedarf keines dunklen Gegenstandes, um Helligkeit zu erzeugen – eine damals noch übliche Methode, die Feddersen nicht mehr anwendete. WT

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
