Together with her friend Harriet Backer (1845–1932), Kitty L. Kielland was among the most outstanding Norwegian women artists of the 19th century. Kielland’s father had wished to prevent her from receiving professional training, but the landscape and marine painter Hans Gude (1853–1903) discovered her talent.
