Otto Heinrich Engel spent almost the entire summer of 1910 on the Flensburg Firth. He did not continue on to Föhr until the end of August, where he again took up residence in Nieblum, finding accommodation with Pauline Bleeg (1845–1912) and even a small studio in the barn of her captain’s house (on Bi de Süd 18). In this time the artist produced this work as well, which he had prepared with two drawings and another pair of studies in a sketch book the year before. In this painted version of the motif, Engel focused on the young woman in Frisian costume and limited the view into the parlour, known as the “pesel”. It was only used for special occasions, for instance to take tea with the vicar. In this case, the young woman will have donned her costume exclusively to sit for the portrait, likely at the artist’s request. Sitting in front of a mirror and putting the finishing touches to her headscarf, the young woman accounts for a large part of the painting. With her hair already braided, the shawl is pinned in numerous pleats and the fringes of the headscarf frame her face and neck. The clever composition of the painting allows us to see the young lady’s face, and even her raised left arm – hidden in the back view – is visible in the reflection. The silver jewels on the costume sparkle as points of light, standing out against the dark hues of the fabric. Engel captured the delicate play of ambient light – which is muted by the curtains and shapes the room – not only in this work but in several of his interior views as well.(1) It remains reserved here, bringing the costume’s depiction to the fore. Beinahe den gesamten Sommer 1910 hatte Otto Heinrich Engel an der Flensburger Förde verbracht. Erst Ende August reiste er nach Föhr und quartierte sich erneut in Nieblum ein, wo er bei Pauline Bleeg (1845–1912) Unterkunft und sogar ein kleines Atelier in der Scheune ihres Kapitänshauses (Bi de Süd 18) fand. Es entstand dieses Werk, das der Künstler im Jahr zuvor mit zwei einzelnen Zeichnungen und zwei weiteren Studien in seinem Skizzenbuch vorbereitet hatte. In der vorliegenden Gemäldefassung des Motivs legte Engel den Fokus auf die junge Frau in friesischer Tracht und reduzierte den Einblick in die gute Stube, den Pesel. Dieser wurde nur zu besonderen Anlässen genutzt – etwa beim Besuch des Pastors zum Tee. Dass die junge Frau nun hier die Tracht anlegt, wird allein der Situation des Porträtsitzens bzw. dem Wunsch des Künstlers geschuldet sein. Einen Großteil der Bildfläche nimmt somit die junge Frau ein, die, vor dem Spiegel sitzend, letzte Handgriffe an ihrem Kopftuch vornimmt. Ihre Haare sind bereits geflochten, das Schultertuch ist in vielen Falten festgesteckt und die Fransen des Kopftuches rahmen Nacken und Gesicht. Durch die geschickte Komposition des Gemäldes können wir das Gesicht der jungen Damen sehen, und sogar ihr linker erhobener Arm – in der Rückenansicht verdeckt – wird in der Spiegelung sichtbar. Die silbernen Schmuckstücke der Tracht blitzen als Lichtpunkte hervor, die sich von den dunklen Farbtönen des Stoffes abheben. Das zarte Spiel des einfallenden Lichtes, das von Gardinen gedämpft den Raum gestaltet, hat Engel nicht nur in diesem Werk, sondern mehrmals in seinen Interieurs festgehalten.(1) Hier tritt es zurück und überlässt der Darstellung der Tracht die Bühne. Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
