The interior in Fritz Cohr's painting shows the tailor Fritz Wilhelm Rörden (1853–1936), widely known on Föhr, and his sister Catharina Rosina Rörden (1850–1935), who were usually called Fritz and Cathrine Jung Hansen after their renowned grandmother Elena Jung Hansen.(1)
We look over the shoulder of Cathrine, dressed in traditional Föhrer costume, into the cosy living room, "Dörnsk" in Frisian, of the siblings' small thatched-roof house. They are sewing together at a folding table opposite each other, which forms a characteristically Frisian ensemble with the blue and white tiles on the wall. The siblings' house was located south of the cemetery wall of St. Johannis in Nieblum on today's Kark-Stieg at number 16. Cathrine was in the islanders' favour because of her skills as a maid. Fritz learned the tailor's trade in Wyk, which provided a secure livelihood for himself and his sister and earned him the respect of the village community. Due to a cleft lip and palate, popularly known as "wolf's tongue", he suffered from a severe speech defect. In childhood, his congenital deformity was surgically corrected. In 1858, Johann-Heinrich Wittmaack (1822–1887) made large-format, coloured pencil drawings of the five-year-old boy, which meticulously describe the clinical picture and the course of healing. These drawings are now in the Medical and Pharmaceutical History Collection of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.
Fritz Cohrs, who studied in Berlin and at the Königsberg Academy of Art, lived in great poverty after the First World War as a wandering painter with his family of seven on the island of Föhr. Christian Krohg, Anna Ancher and Laurits Tuxen reworked the subject of the interior, and the painting shown here clearly reflects Cohrs' engagement with these painters from the artists' colony in Skagen in its structure, colour and lighting design.(2) SNS

Wir blicken über die Schulter der in Föhrer Tracht gekleideten Cathrine in die gemütliche Stube, friesisch „Dörnsk“, des kleinen Reetdachhauses der Geschwister. Sie sitzen sich bei gemeinsamer Näharbeit an einem Klapptisch gegenüber, welcher mit den blau-weißen Fliesen an der Wand ein charakteristisch friesisches Ensemble bildet. Das Haus der Geschwister befand sich südlich des Friedhofswalles von St. Johannis in Nieblum am heutigen Kark-Stieg mit der Nummer 16. Cathrine stand aufgrund ihrer Fähigkeiten als Zugehfrau in der Gunst der Inselbewohner*innen. Fritz erlernte in Wyk das Schneiderhandwerk, wodurch er für sich und seine Schwester für einen sicheren Lebensunterhalt sorgte und sich den Respekt der dörflichen Gemeinschaft verschaffte. Durch eine Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumen-Spalte, im Volksmund auch „Wolfsrachen“ genannt, litt er an einem schweren Sprachfehler. Im Kindesalter wurde seine angeborene Fehlbildung operativ korrigiert. Johann-Heinrich Wittmaack (1822–1887) fertigte 1858 großformatige, kolorierte Bleistiftzeichnungen von dem fünfjährigen Jungen an, welche in großer Sorgfalt Krankheitsbild und Heilungsverlauf schildern. Diese Zeichnungen befinden sich heute in der Medizin- und Pharmaziehistorische Sammlung der Christan-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.
Fritz Cohrs, welcher in Berlin und an der Kunstakademie in Königsberg studiert hatte, lebte nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg in großer Armut als umherziehender Maler mit seiner siebenköpfigen Familie auf der Insel Föhr. Christian Krohg, Anna Ancher oder Laurits Tuxen erarbeiteten sich das Sujet des Interieurs auf neu und das hier gezeigte Gemälde bildet in Aufbau, Farb- und Lichtgestaltung deutlich Cohrs´ Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Maler*innen der Künstlerkolonie in Skagen ab.(2) SNS

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
