A blueish-grey sky with wisps of white clouds spans the flat dune landscape where three sheep are grazing. The animals help the viewer to appraise the approximate size of the dunes. Listland, known as the “elbow” on the North Sea island of Sylt, remains an impressive and seemingly untouched location with its expansive dune and heath landscape. The German-Baltic painter Eugène Gustav Dücker, who taught the landscape class at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie from 1872 to 1916, was particularly fond of motifs from the North and Baltic Sea. So it is no surprise that he visited Sylt several times between 1873 and 1891 – often accompanied by his friend and fellow painter, Carl Irmer, whose works are also represented at the MKdW. Among the hallmarks of his teaching were “seeing correctly”, as well as recognising and grasping the causes and effects of lighting and colour phenomena.(1) Dücker captured a gentle mood of light in the large-format work he most likely painted in his Düsseldorf studio after returning from the island of Sylt.
The art historian Ernst Schlee characterises the style that Dücker helped to define on the way to Impressionism as follows: “On Sylt, the task of attempting to distil the effect of light and air was always new. The sea in particular was perceived as a new motif; no longer did it appear agitated, hostile and destructive, but imbued with a shimmering calm and melancholy waiting. Natural phenomena shifted from excited external movements to the quieter optical processes of glowing, gleaming, percolating, mirroring. A new and smoother method of painting was developed to depict these manifestations. Simple reproductions of reality displaced the stylised staging of nature […].”(2) WT

Der Kunsthistoriker Ernst Schlee charakterisiert die Stilrichtung, die Dücker auf dem Weg zum Impressionismus mitbestimmt hat, wie folgt: „Auf Sylt war die Aufgabe, sich um die Wirkung von Licht und Luft zu bemühen, immer wieder neu gestellt. Insonderheit die See wurde als Motiv neu gesehen, nicht mehr aufgewühlt und feindlich-zerstörerisch erschien sie, sondern in schimmernder Ruhe, in melancholischem Warten. Das Ereignis des Natürlichen verschob sich von erregenden äußerlichen Bewegungsvorgängen in die stilleren optischen Vorgänge des Leuchtens, Blinkens, des Durchsickerns, Spiegelns. Für die Darstellung solcher Erscheinungen wurde eine neue, geschmeidigere Malweise gefunden. Das einfache Bild der Wirklichkeit verdrängte den effektvollen Auftritt der Natur […].“(2) WT

Insights into the graphic collection of the MKdW

The Museum Kunst der Westküste is focused on the art of the North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The collection’s works explore the theme of “Sea & Coast”, concentrating primarily on the period from around 1830 to 1930. International contemporary art is also represented in the collection.

Discover Norwegian landscape painting with pictures by artists such as Johan Christian Dahl, Peder Balke and Edvard Munch as well as works from the Danish artists’ colony in Skagen, including those of by Anna and Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer and Christian Krohg. The German impressionist Max Liebermann, who regularly spent time along the Dutch coast, is extraordinarily well represented. Dutch romantics like Andreas Schelfhout or the protagonists of the Hague School, such as Henrik Willem Mesdag or Jozef Israëls, also place this coast before our eyes. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop herald the arrival of modern art. Germany’s North Sea coast can be experienced in the expressionist works of artists like Max Beckmann, Erich Heckel and Emil Nolde.
